The tools of Molina’s choosing, including dobro and lapsteel guitars, are especially evocative of an aching loss, so its natural that Josephine be his most country influenced album yet. It’s also comparatively stripped-down, so the listener seems confronted with an empty horizon, at every turn expressing something missing. This would all be belabored and depressing- that is, if it weren’t so simply beautiful.

Once upon a time there was but an act named Songs: Ohia, and it was good. Led by midwest mystic and comforting debbie-downer Jason Molina, Songs: Ohia built a legion of dedicated fans on a foundation of archetypal imagery (think factories, trees, seas, night, birds, the color blue, etc.) and painstakingly heartfelt performance. Really, it's hard not to miss the earnest approach of the act, but a few years back Molina—an older and wiser Molina, perhaps worn out on so often being a solo musician, and worn out from writing music on the spare, sorrowful side—decided to retire the Songs: Ohia moniker and embrace a full band of country-ish bohemians under the Magnolia Electric Company nameplate. The result has been an often-rocking, often-joyful, often-classic-rock-y approach to songcraft. All that plus a bunch more awaits the eager beaver this Thursday night at the Mohawk, as Magnolia Electric Company headline a stellar three-deep lineup.

Emo's is the place to be tonight as California experimental post-punkers Xiu Xiu bring their darkly gorgeous new album to life. If you caught Xiu Xiu at Emo's Annex during South By Southwest this year, you know that Jamie Stewart's noise-and-melody symphonies are even better live than they are on wax. Stewart and live partner Caralee McElroy make the absolute most out of their collection of drums, guitars, shakers, keys and noisemakers - all complimented by Stewart's alternately beautiful and unhinged vocals.

Fans of the indie-rock will find much to like in the latest concert update. Flying V lovers My Morning Jacket, the willfully obtuse Fiery Furnaces, and alt.country godfather Jay Farrar have each been added to Austin's fall music schedule. As we've mentioned, the sheer volume of shows is unprecedented, so get out and enjoy the fact that every band you like is coming to town in the next two months. Thanks as always to...

As Elvis Costello might say, we just don't know where to begin. Even if you are skipping ACL, the fall is turning into a music wonderland. Acts of every genre and size are booking Austin's clubs up like there's no tomorrow, leaving music lovers with many questions on how to spend both time and cash this fall. Trust us, you can't see it all, so pick your favorites and buy tickets in advance to...

While August continues to look farily quiet for roadshows, September and October are just blowing up. Many indie stalwarts have recently scheduled appearances for fall semester, so start saving up some coin. Among the highlights: Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, M. Ward, Jose Gonzales, and Ladytron. Unless you've been under a rock this week, you already know that loud dinosaurs The Rolling Stones are also planning a visit; that said, no ticket info has become...

Danielson (formerly the Danielson Famile) is an indie pop/Christian gospel troupe band of brothers and sisters from suburban New Jersey. Formed as a result of elder Smith and frontman Daniel's senior thesis at Rutgers, entitled A Prayer for Every Hour, the band released a steady stream of albums starting the late 90s. Back in 2001 they signed to Secretly Canadian -- home to beloved indie acts like Antony and the Johnsons, Jens Lekman, Damien Jurado, and Magnolia Electric Co -- on which they've recently come out with the amazing Ships.
