Deep in the heart of Tejas, November 2nd means it's time to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, the holiday that's emblemized the grinning calavera since like, 500 years before designers went batshit crazy stenciling skulls all over everything. It's a day to honor the lives of the dead, and to acknowledge death as a continuation of life, oh and also to make party at La Zona Rosa for their Rock Y Roll Dia celebration. Cine...

In a little over a week, we're heading up to New York City for CMJ, South by Southwest Music's almost-as-hip cousin. We're skipping most of the official stuff, but we'll be throwing an afterparty in Brooklyn on the day after Halloween—right smack on Día de los Muertos.

http://awesomeinc.imeem.com Thunderbirds are Now!
Make History, Detroit band Thunderbirds are Now!'s 3rd full-length and second on Frenchkiss Records, does away with a band in full tail-chase and depicts one at it's peak: no longer stressing about what people might expect, but rather wearing their influences better than one of Interpol's tailored suits.
http://awesomeinc.imeem.com Lo Fi Fnk (first US appearance!)
Lo-Fi-Fnk's music is an unlikely mix of innocence and maturity - 'Boylife' is fundamentally about growing up and moving on, tearing things down, new experiences, confusion gaining knowledge, realisations, breaking free, and of course…partying. To music that makes you wanna…damn….DANCE.
http://awesomeinc.imeem.com The Harlem Shakes
Bouncy Broolynites Harlem Shakes' long-waited ep, Burning Birthdays, mashes new-school sunshine pop against damaged indie doo-wop, pounding the result into anthemic, Yeah Yeah Yeah-style rock. Singer Lexy Benaim lisps with dark, boyish glee as alternately cutting and rolling guitar lines cascade over long ooohs and ahhhs, bright synth patterns, and the occasional sax (there's even a flute in there somewhere).
http://awesomeinc.imeem.com James Friedman
…when we heard about a DJ who goes around calling himself James F!@$%^ Friedman, he got extra points in our little black cred book. And when we discovered that he spins bands that we love, he got his own f!@$%^ page….Go Commando! features floor-friendly mixes from Annie, Bloc Party, the Rapture and a bunch of obscure people with ridiculous names. — Pitchfork
http://awesomeinc.imeem.com CSS
São Paulo, Brazil's provocative, freewheeling dance-rock sextet CSS takes its name from an abbreviation of "cansei de ser sexy," which is Portuguese for "tired of being sexy" (though, considering that the lead singer goes by the name Lovefoxxx, it's arguable how much that phrase actually applies to the band).

Tomorrow night, The Streets take to the stage at La Zona Rosa. Mike Skinner's third album, The Hardest Way to Make An Easy Living, has drawn many favorable reviews ("twice as good as any album about the price of celebrity has a right to be" -- Guardian UK). Be sure to arrive in time to check out opener Lady Sovereign, easily one of the most entertaining acts we caught at SXSW. If you haven't...

Local band Furthest From The Star are hoping for a record deal with one of the major labels, and need a music video to send off to them. They're asking for a "a lot of friends and people" out in the audience over at Music Lab (Oltorf & Lamar), tomorrow evening for a brief shoot. (Tuesday, 6:30-7:30pm, Music Lab) This weekend, our buddy Angel and cohorts are organizing a Dia de Los Muertos-themed party (isn't...
