When the debate is done, each of us will take time to reflect on the solemn decision that lies before us...

The first segment of Radiohead's North American tour has been announced, and Austin gets the shaft: Houston's Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion will get a show on May 17, and Dallas' Superpages.com Center (!) will host the Brits on May 18. Tickets go on sale Thursday (Valentine's day) via W.A.S.T.E. with general on-sales following on February 16.
Image from Ringo Deathstarr’s MySpace It’s no secret that Austin is home to one of the most prolific artistic scenes in the country, Live Music Capital of the World or not. Any weekend in the city promises a number of day time occurences and a plethora of evening events. A quick browse through this weekend’s notifications leads one to fun activities for the kids at The Flying Theater Machine’s Wang Dang Doodle Hour or a...
The marathon that has been renamed more times than Austin has been called the “Live Music Capital of the World” will kick off with a 7AM start time. Founded in 1992, the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon (this year called the AT&T Marathon) is expected to draw 11,000 runners, 30,000 spectators and is the 15th largest marathon in the U.S. One of the more well-known runners (no, it isn't Lance) will be our own mayor...
Austin may be the "Live Music Capital of The World", but there is a relatively dry season. Once UT lets out for the fall semester and this city shuts up for the holidays, what's an audiophile to do? Suggestion: like bears that build up fat deposits to live off of once they retire to their relatives' caves to hibernate, you should catch a few great shows to delay the onset of withdrawals. Tonight, Emo's...
In an article about "hip" American cities published over the weekend, the New York Times effectively thumbed its nose at Austin, calling us the "Live Music Capital of the South." South? Obviously someone neglected to read the press release. Admittedly, taking the Times seriously in this instance is predicated on the laughable assumption that its cantankerous old coots have any basis for evaluating "hipness." Still, it hurts. Austin officials were up in arms this...
A memorial show honoring Clifford Antone will be held tonight at his club, starting at 4pm. The free tribute includes performances by Double Trouble, Malford Milligan, Guy Forsythe and Cyril Neville. News8 Austin considers Antone's long-lasting influence on Austin's music scene in a piece published earlier this morning: "He brought blues clubs here in the '70s when no one else was doing that. He brought leading musicians from around the country and sometimes from around...
Combining the admittedly disparate ideas that Austin is both the Live Music Capital of the World and a burgeoning mecca for fashion and style, two locals are embarking on a bold new venture this summer: they're opening up a brand-new music venue ... that also happens to be a barbershop.
If we read an author’s work in McSweeney’s, The Believer or Paste, we blindly assume the author’s other work is excellent as well. So, knowing that writer and musician Jack Pendarvis has appeared in all three publications, we can only assume he’s a bad ass. Pendarvis’ new collection of short stories, The Mysterious Secrets of the Valuable Treasure, is a Pushcart Prize-winning book that, according to his publisher, is “laugh-out-loud funny and dripping with...
Yea, so maybe this has next-to-nothing to do with Austin, but we ARE (allegedly) the Live Music Capital of the World, so get off our nutz. Anywho…The Sun has reported that legendary gangster rapper Ice-T is set to produce a new rap album. But it’s not just any rap album, it is the debut rap stylings of one David Hasselhoff. As you probably know, the lecherous home-permed former Baywatch director/producer/star is HUGE in Germany, having released seven albums to wildly populärer beifall (that’s “popular acclaim,” to the uninitiated). Ice-T, who has probably already lost serious street cred for playing the 5-0 in Law & Order: SVU is sure to be relegated to the ranks of such gangster legends as Vanilla Ice after this one. Apparently the two guys live in the same neighborhood and are quite close. Ice-T supposedly said he was impressed with the way, the newly monikered, “Hassle The Hoff” “regulates those big breastesed bitches.” Word.
It’s no secret that Austin is a kind of haven for musicians. After all, we ARE the Live Music Capital of the World, right? All sorts of artists, bands, producers, and record labels call Austin home, or at least Second Home. And with world-renowned music fests like SXSW and ACL, our little Central Texas oasis has even more opportunities to make musicians fall in love with it. Well, add a few more to the...
Compiling a respectable musical showcase of local talent that lends credibility to Austin’s self-proclaimed "Live Music Capital" claim is, if not a Sisyphean endeavor, certainly an extraordinarily daunting task. But indie upstart label I Eat Records somehow manages to accomplish just this with their debut compilation CD, "Appetizers & Leftovers". Make no mistake, the album's modest titling almost deliberately shrouds the fact that hidden within lies an ambitious 21-course aural feast featuring everyone from...
Liberty Lunch, Steamboat, Twang Twang Shock-A-Boom … does anyone remember when the "Live Music Capital of the World" really was the "Live Music Capital of the World," or is it one of those myths like "growing up in the 50’s" where everybody knew your name and kids could ride their bikes down the street ‘til the sun went down? It seems that decades past always seem better than the present. Well, for anyone who wasn’t living here during the early 90’s or never saw his Best Buy commercial, David Garza represents the best of that era. Dahveed shows are legendary events that everyone claims to have been part of. Being a true artist, David has constantly evolved to create a style and sound that is truly unique. Each release is it’s own animal, as evident by the last two free EPs he released on his website. If you’ve never seen the man himself in action, get your tickets now for his upcoming gig this Friday at Stubb’s. Tickets are $12 and will be available for only a short time as David’s shows always sell out, and don’t forget to bring cash to pick up new CDs he will (hopefully) be selling as he promised in "Ill Troubador."
