Tonight will be a welcoming party, of sorts, at Mohawk - Sophia Knapp of the band Lights recently relocated to Austin from New York and it will be interesting to see how she integrates herself into the indie scene here. Lights was formed six years ago from a chance meeting in an art supply store; the small Language of Stone label released their self-titled debut in 2008, and have signed to Drag City for Rites, a collision of fuzz-wrapped, overdriven guitars, slinky backbeats and vocal harmonies somewhere between Fleetwood Mac and Ut. Initiated by guitarist Sophia Knapp and drummer Linnea Shults, what was a quartet/quintet (featuring former White Magic bassist Adam McLeod) is now a trio and, ironically, with a tightened format they have captured a much larger and more explosive sound.

Private Pleasure - Talking with Sophia Knapp of Lights
Sophia Knapp began dipping into songwriting in secret; her main affiliation was with the visual arts, a passion she explored through painting and collage. But thanks to a chance meeting with another music-loving visual artist, Knapp began working with sound more seriously, and with the band Lights she and her partners plumb their own combination of freak-funk. The band signed to Drag City for the release of last year’s Rites, and in anticipation of their show on Friday at the Mohawk, Knapp spoke with us about her beginnings and recent move to Austin.
Whale of a Heart: Bill Callahan Holiday Matinee
Bill Callahan, the staring-into-the-void force behind Smog, has been at the forefront of the lo-fi scene since the early 90s. Although Smog’s music was highly personal and bore Callahan’s signature cold vocals and dolorous lyrics, this year’s warmly lauded Sometimes I Wish I Were An Eagle is only the second album released under his own name. Touching upon his on-again, off-again relationship with darkness, it not only features some of the best lyrical lines of 2009 (“I used to be sort of blind but now I can sort of see”), but more than fully justifies his movement away from lo-fi instrumentals through his most supple arrangements yet.

Turn Off the Bright Lights
David Owen has an interesting article in last week's New Yorker (the Aug. 20 issue - only the abstract is online) discussing light pollution. The bottom line is that leaving the lights on all the time (mainly streetlights and building-exterior lights) not only brightens the night sky, but is also economically wasteful, environmentally damaging and probably causes cancer. It also doesn't decrease crime or have any other real benefits. Lights like the "glare bomb"...
