Lightning Bolt returned to Austin for the first time in over three years on Saturday. The Rhode Island duo, composed of bassist Brian Gibson and drummer Brian Chippendale, played to a sold-out crowd at Mohawk and photographer Trent Lesikar captured the action.

Like very hot peppers or gratuitously bloody scenes in movies, the music of Lightning Bolt attracts a certain sort of person - an extreme sort willing to push the boundaries of their bodies and brains to often painful levels. Punishing eardrums since the release of the eponymous debut in 1997, this noise duo is touring behind last year's Earthly Delights album. Featuring odd, warbled vocals and only rhythm instrumentation, they either have your number or they don't. Click through the jump to win tickets and read more about the show.
New Release Tuesday: Lightning Bolt
After four years, Brian Chippendale (drums) and Brian Gibson (bass) are back with their follow-up to 2005's Hypermagic Mountain. Luckily, time hasn't caused the Providence-based duo to forget their roots. They're still pummeling listeners with raucous, unabashed noise and fuzzed-out low ends. On Earthly Delights, they venture a bit closer towards the metallic fringes of rock, offering what sounds like a bit of Albini-influenced tone. "Sound Guardians" rips through the history of punk rock, turning it on its head a couple times over (with speed), and "Colossus" comes close to being a rock ballad, oozing happily distorted bass lines drenched in Gibson's howl. All in all another solid release from a pair of hyper-metal noise rockers.
