In an effort to put to rest the debate over whether Austin has an actual gay and lesbian community, eight prominent LGBT organizations today announced the formation of the Pride Coalition. The unifying entity is, in many ways, largely an effort to eliminate some of the petty squabbling over resources and public attention that many of these groups often found themselves caught up in. It also hopes to better promote the various community volunteer efforts that take place throughout the year.

Two weeks ago saw the launch of Forward Austin, a new publication geared towards gay and lesbian professionals in the business community. Austin's fifth annual Pride Parade, hosted by the Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, kicks off this Saturday evening and serves as the cornerstone for a bunch of events happening all weekend. Last year's parade drew about 40,000 spectators and 1,300 participants, with this year's roster looking much the same. The parade route starts and ends on South Congress just north of riverside, making its way north to 4th Street before lopping over to San Antonio and cutting back on 5th Street.

Have patience navigating downtown this weekend, as Austin plays host to two huge events: On Saturday night, the fourth annual Austin Pride Parade takes place at 8pm. The parade route starts south of Town Lake on Congress Avenue heading downtown, making a loop along 4th and 5th street to San Antonio before completing the roundtrip back to Congress and Riverside.
