The ND has gone through a number of changes throughout the past year, from shortening its name (it was called The Independent) to remodeling the warehouse-like interior. But this weekend the ND is looking kick off (again) with a series of shows celebrating the grand re-opening of one of the East Side’s most promising venues. And tonight, it’s all about the local music, with performances from a number of Austin’s up-and-comers.
The ND Re-Launch with L.A.X. [Show Preview]
L.A.X. EP Release w/Fresh Millions, Missions and DJ Orion
The electronic dance band L.A.X. has been spreading synth beats and love all our its native roots lately. They've covered the Austin trifecta of acronyms—SXSW, ACL and FFF. For something that started as a electro duo performing at house parties, L.A.X. has come a long way and deserves this current burst of limelight. The celebration of their success continues tonight at the Parish with an EP release for A, another installment in a trilogy of single-letter album names.
Fun Fun Fun Fest Previews: Neon Indian and L.A.X.
An Austin band by way of Brooklyn, Neon Indian is the elusive new project of Alan Palamo (also behind the one-man electro project Vega). The name Neon Indian itself gives due justice to the type of music Palamo produces—mystical synth noise, kooky hooks, and sensual vocals. The project started as a bunch of lo-fi recordings before the No Way Down EP was made in 2008. Full of reverb and distortion, song titles like "Should Have Taken Acid With You," add to the mystique of the project.
Giveaway: Thunderheist @ Emo's [Thursday]
Turn2Live.com, along with local marketing entity Knuckle Rumbler, has initiated a series of events in town (entitled Mood2Music) to promote its website which “enables users to discover shows using intuitive search terms.” (You can learn more about the concept on their site.) They had a successful (and highly enjoyable) first outing last month at Club Deville, complete with Annie Ray’s photobooth and live sets by VEGA (performing at this year’s Fun Fest) and Neiliyo (who barely missed making the final cut for a spot at Lollapalooza this year but ended up assisting Car Stereo (Wars) at the festival). Heck, the de Ville shindig had the Austinist ping pong team partying into the wee hours.
