Now this, this is going to be some kind of unhinged, goofy, and indubitably fun time. Atlanta’s the Coathangers are in town again, and this time around they’re supporting their new record and first for Seattle’s Suicide Squeeze label, the aptly titled Scramble. For a band that essentially began as a one-off joke at a house party, the Coathangers have gotten a lot of mileage out of a crass abortion reference and a sound that's somewhere between vintage Athens new wave and a ramshackle Kathleen Hanna tribute/novelty act.

Boston's Pretty & Nice are a slam dunk for Austin show-goers, and their '80s-inspired electro-pop, cat claw sharp and relentless, will keep us riveted at Emo's tonight. The new record Get Young (Hardly Art) is a pummeling pop experience, taking few breaths along the way.
Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Beard & Moustache Competition + Valentine Prom Extravaganza! + more
Emo’s, as always, powers our evenings with a good amount of solid shows this weekend. Zookeeper and Zykos bring heartfelt indie-rock to the outside stage on Friday while Ume and Haunting Oboe Music take on the inside crowd with belligerent, experimental rock n’ roll.
Free Week hits its stride on Saturday with three separate shows at Emo’s Lounge, Emo’s inside stage, and the outside stage as well.
As Christmas approaches, good shows tend to get sporadic and good friends tend to leave town, but the promise of Emo’s Free Week will carry us into the empty canvas that is 2008. Still, we have ten days or so to find that one last good moment of 2007.
Ringo Deathstarr auteur Elliott Frazier has had a banner year: having soldiered on through countless lineup changes, the band managed to release the best shoegaze record of the year (well, EP), earned a coveted slot among The Onion AV Club's Worst Band Names of the Year (scroll down a page or so), and head out for an east coast tour in February (nothing to put in parentheses here)! You can wish them well tonight at Emo's where they'll play with their pals in La Snacks, plus Haunting Oboe Music and Fever Dreams. Also, Merry Christmas!

Now veterans of two additional records, Single Frame distinguishes itself with eccentric pop that utilizes a variety of jingles, be it the simply synth outputs or unusual sounds obtained from...
With bands constantly forming, regrouping, burning out or fading away, it takes moxie to stick around on the Austin club scene long enough to get noticed. Case in point: Elliott Frazier and his jangly noise-pop trio Ringo Deathstarr. Frazier originally formed Deathstarr two years ago with confederates fom his hometown of Beaumont; following a seemingly endless period of lineup changes, the band is currently making waves on fancy music blogs and radio playlists worldwide. We...
