Spoon (6:30pm): So here's the thing about Spoon: they're a studio band. And on record, they're pretty much bulletproof for this decade. But the band also have a deserved reputation as a sometimes shaky live act, and such was the case for the show's beginning today. Britt Daniel and the band emerged without opening music or much ceremony, plowing right into a half-dozen tracks from new album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. But they...

Taylor Mills Lullagoodbye (Aquapulse) There’s a new safe word being grunted out of S&M dungeons everywhere, and it is Lullagoodbye. It means slow down, ease up and take fewer risks. Although the album mostly lies within the boundaries of uninspired adult contemporary, at times her voice is filled with smooth, sometimes-sultry melody and a graceful piano whispers like a bedtime story. Then, there’s the added bonus of looking at her staggeringly attractive mug on every...

After a month of guesswork, the ACL Fest lineup is here. And it's quite a good one. While the wild speculation of headliners like Neil Young and Stevie Wonder once again proved false, the key items one sees this year are depth and balance. Having spent yesterday looking over the roster, we have the following observations on the 2007 edition of ACL. The Good: A Great Top 10. Had you told us that we'd...

Below is a list of the new albums released in recent weeks. You can get most at End of an Ear or Waterloo Records. SpotlightMusic From The O.C. Mix 5 - Soundtrack (Warner Bros) Fox’s The O.C. might only be in its third season, but they’ve somehow already released five accompanying soundtracks. Their latest, aptly titled Music From The O.C. Mix 5, is thus far the best in their ever-expanding collection of indie-rock showcases:...

Yesterday the 2005 Nationwide Mercury Prize nominees were announced in London. The award - voted on by industry experts, writers, and artists - recognizes the best in British and Irish music. Why is this relevant halfway around the globe? Of the twelve bands in the running, over half of them appeared at this year's SXSW festival: Bloc Party, The Go! Team, Hard-Fi, Kaiser Chiefs, The Magic Numbers, M.I.A., and Maxïmo Park are among the lucky few now plotting to pull a Tonya Harding on the clear favorite, Coldplay.

The 2005 ACL Festival Schedule was posted online yesterday, and for the most part it looks like they spaced the acts out pretty well. Though we'll still probably spend the next two months at work dreaming up dozens of band-hopping strategies, thus far we're pretty stoked to be able to see awesome acts like the Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, and The Decemberists without having to forego another great band at the same...

None of the Austinist staff was among the lucky 1 million who scored tickets to the much-ballyhooed Live 8 international music orgy. And chances are, neither were you!

In recent years the UK has supplied an otherwise apathetic American audience with sensational rock bands, of such intensity that one might pronounce this decade the renaissance of New Wave Britrock. Or not. These virile ejaculations so recently spewed forth from the fertile loins of the Queen's Land include The Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, and the Futureheads. Among those whom we adore, consider British Sea Power: a troupe of five young lads from Brighton, England....

Soon to be Austinist contributor Sonnet Blanton writes: We know. It’s SXSW. Everyone’s rushing round trying to meet Anil Dash and see the Kaiser Chiefs, now, while they’re still that band that most people haven’t heard of, and hoping to run into Wayne Coyne, but people, next Sunday night, the Alamo Drafthouse is the place to be. The downtown location will be hosting The Muppet Movie Sing-a-Long. Austinist doesn’t need to remind you how lucky...
