Some of Austin's most creative minds have joined forces to put together the first Austin Art Mercado. This Saturday, the self-described "anarchic open market" will provide an opportunity for artists and art enthusiasts to showcase and appreciate art in a fun environment. Set in a historic landmark home, the event will include live music, refreshments, and dancing, in addition to art for sale and temporary visual art installations. Mercado organizers and participants hope to make art more accessible while helping artists make a living.

Two days after SXSW kicks off and our city becomes a living, breathing conglomeration of people from all walks of life, Austinist presents Local Music is Sexy at the PureVolume Ranch. Past Local Music is Sexy events have showcased acts such as The Black Angels, Brothers and Sisters, The Lemurs, The Corto Maltese, Black Before Red, and IV Thieves to name a few. Last year, we remember dancing the night away to Car Stereo (Wars)’ mad mash-ups, drinking free Red Bull (among other things), and having a go at the sweet Wii set up in that little lounge at the location. All in all, an excellent time.
Because we love you so very much, we've gone ahead and put together a special mini-site dedicated to this year's SXSW Festival.
Austinist & Gothamist are proud to announce our SXSW day party, taking place on Wednesday, March 12 at the Mohawk. The party kicks off around 11 a.m., and the day ends at 6, but not before Shout Out Louds, Shearwater, Liam Finn and Phosphorescent perform. As usual, the party is free, open to all. See you then!
Our Indieroke night returns this Tuesday to The Mohawk. What started out as a one-off fling with rock stardom has turned into a monthly gathering of like-minded folks craving that fleeting moment of exhilaration. If you haven’t made it to one yet, we strongly recommend getting there in a timely fashion to get your name and song on the list early…and often. (You know who you are!) We will have multiple song list books going forward to ease that pain.

As you may have noticed already, we’re hosting karaoke all night at The Mohawk tomorrow. Join us at 9 p.m. for Austinist Indieroke and enjoy the inevitable spectacle featuring amazing, average, and sub par vocalists, each belting out a choice hit from our rich catalogue.
When Animal Collective played in Austin last, it was at the start of our sticky, wet summer, and the band mesmerized their crowd at Antone’s with a remarkable set featuring quite a few tracks from the then-unreleased Strawberry Jam and even some post-Strawberry Jam jams as well. Now, at the advent of fall (or what we Texans call fall), the Collective returned to Emo’s, and fans of the New York-based group were more than ready...
Austinist is asking you to keep an eye out for a young lady who went missing over a week ago in South Texas. Jessica Birge, age 25, was last seen on August 11, 2007 in New Braunfels at the Gruene Outpost River Lodge at around 10:00pm after tubing the Comal with friends. She was last seen wearing a pink bikini and can be identified by a unique scroll tattoo on the back of her neck....
Saturday June 30th marks the 5th installment to the multi-media spectacle Everyone Knows Everyone, sponsored by The Onion. This event is held twice a year and focuses on the celebration of artistic community in our city. Many have compared it to Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable, where visual artists and multi-genre musicians, DJs and filmmakers showcase their talents in front of a live audience. The event is being held on all of Emo's stages...

The long spring has been wonderful. But now it's getting warmer, things are getting slower, and Austin is quieting down a bit for the summer. Not as much as in past years, we admit, but at least crazy Longhorn alum won't be overtaking I-35 for football games. And with a quiet summer music schedule, we're looking forward to delving in to the local scene. We here at Austinist will be your guide, so keep...

Austin's Explosions In The Sky play powerful instrumental indie-rock that has been compared to Mogwai and Sigur Ros and are widely lauded by critics. Their live shows have become so popular that their Emo's show in March has been sold out for weeks, and multiple-night runs are now needed in cities like New York and Toronto. After a three-plus year wait, EITS's new album All Of A Sudden, I Miss Everyone arrives on Tuesday....
There's no question that Jenny Milne is a serious designer. Jenny, the woman behind Machine Ballerina, moved her work out of her bedroom last year to a studio in her house. Dozens of block patterns hang from the walls and two sewing machines share space on a large wooden table in this modest living area. But it doesn’t even contain Jenny’s source of inspiration: fabric. “This is my commitment to my craft,” she says, pointing...
We've been all over the city in this column, covering houses from the south side, all the way to the heart of suburbia. In this edition, Austinist returns to our love of life on the cheap. Artists, thrift store hawks and the underemployed by choice - no need to get over a barrel when buying those new digs. This lovable city is still choc-a-block with awesome homes to be had for under 200K, especially...
We tried to branch out, but we can't help it - we love the '04. That's where all the cool shit is. Sure, it has plenty of overpriced, weird, crazy-ass listings (nice giant chess set, DORKS!), but there are still some nice houses at reasonable prices. Plus, with the '02 resisting "gentrification," '01 and '03 super-expensive, and '05 full of spies and longhorns fighting with hundred-year-old statues, '04 is the only place for us...
For those of us who have tasted the good life--spending some part of our residency in the '04--the idea of living anywhere else in the city can induce sweaty palms and a sincere doubt about the viability of social life beyond Polvo's and bud-induced trips to Homeslice. In recent years however, the popularity of this neighborhood has driven up prices to the point that buying is significantly more expensive than renting, creating a financial...
As the year end approaches, we are in a reflective mood. Most of the houses featured in this column have sold (probably not entirely because of their inclusion here). What about the stragglers? Which houses looked solid but turned out shaky? Here are a few: 1107 Maufrais Street - $439,500 (down from $450,000). 1,710 square feet. Built in 1936. We put this one on the top because it is the most confusing. Maybe Clarksville...

An article in Dwell this month about Portland's transportation system and generally awesome urban development program has us a little down on highway-centric Texas, so to try to get our mind off the toll-roads, we're thinking about something a little different this week: wide open spaces. Room to make a big mistake. Here are this weeks listings: 1400 Waldorf Avenue - $85,900. 1,040 square feet. Built in 1966. This looks like a shack in...
MONDAY [18] film • Capote at Café Mundi (8pm, Free) film • old Joy at Alamo Downtown (7pm) film • Red at Rounders Pizzeria (8pm, Free) film • Bowling for Columbine at Austin Java (9pm, Free) film • Music Monday: I Swear I Was There at Alamo Downtown (9:45pm, $2) shopping • Blue Genie Art Bazaar at Blue Genie HQ shopping • Holiday Party with IV Thieves at Beauty Bar...
We're rolling down Exposition in an Expedition, and they be like, "Ah no, no, no he didn't." So we're like, "No, he didn't"? Really? Who talks like that? Austinist editors, sure, but who else? You see a lot of Expeditions rolling down Exposition, especially when it's time to drop Jacob and Madison at Casis Elementary. Of course, relatively few of these lacrosse moms live on Exposition - most of them live in the million...
For those of us who pine for a centrally-located Craftsman's-style bungalow, but refuse to pony up two fiddy per square foot or hold down an extreme job to bankroll it, this week's column focuses on the house that made America's heartland great - the ranch-style home of the 1950s and early 60s. A spate of home construction in Austin during this time--in areas that were then considered 'suburban'--provides creative and cost-concious house hunters with...
As a follow-up to the $200k special a few weeks ago, this week's column focuses on houses around $700k. Here are this weeks listings: 621 St. George Street, Gonzales, TX - $699,000. 6,000 square feet. Built in 1895. So, this house isn't in "Austin" or "all that close." WHATEV. It is totally awesome. Move to Gonzales, lure small children into one of the two turrets of your Queen Anne Victorian mansion, and bake them...
Just when you thought you didn't know what to expect from this column ... WHAM! We hit you with a surprise-free set of newly listed houses near downtown, just like we did before we started mixing things up. Didn't see that coming, did you? Here are this week's listings: 66 Navasota Street - $142,000; 960 square feet. Built in 1934. Nice looking house with a great east side location. Great trees in the back,...
In an effort to mix things up and keep the haters guessing, this week's column is going to take a look at four houses available at a specific price point: $200,000. In honor of the newly opened toll-roads, we are including a house in Taylor and a house in Round Rock. Don't flip-out; there are plenty of others just like them getting built every day! (Warning to flippers: don't flip-in; there are plenty of...
An annual showcase and celebration of all things DIY, the Stitch Fashion Show and Guerrilla Craft Bazaar returns for its fourth installment this Saturday with an even bigger and better lineup. Back in 2003, local designers Jesse Kelly-Landes (Amet and Sasha), Tina Sparkles (Sparkle Craft), Karly Hand (Identity Crisis Clothing) and Jennifer Perkins (Naughty Secretary Club), dismayed that Austin lacked an effective outlet for independent designers to exhibit their work, orchestrated one of the city's...
Last week's column proved that our readers lover flippers, so we're starting this week off with a house advertised as about-to-be-flipped to some lucky buyer. Wanna get flipped? Check it: 7401 Glenhill Road - $379,000; 2,000 square feet. Looking for a house that uses a wide variety of wood types and paint colors? Love glass brick and murals of street lights and pavement? Hoping to live super close to I-35, 183 and 290? This...
