Jonathan Richman is taking residency in Austin for the next few days playing tonight and tomorrow at Hole in The Wall, then moving over to South Congress for early shows at The Continental Club Friday and Saturday. This gives you plenty of opportunities to catch the eclectic singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. For those of you who don’t know, Richman has been crafting music since the mid-1960’s, when he was couch surfing at The Velvet Underground’s manager’s NYC digs and trying to break into the music biz.
Jonathan Richman at Hole in The Wall and Continental Club [Show Previews]
Jonathan Richman Returns to Austin in January
The legendary singer/songwriter and founder of the Modern Lovers will play the Cactus Cafe on January 25 and 26, then head to the Continental for a two-night stand on January 27 and 28. These nights kick off a full year of touring with new drummer Tommy Larkins. He'll be supporting his 2008 release Because Her Beauty Is Raw And Wild and putting finishing touches on an as-yet-unnamed 2010 full length.
New Release Tuesday: Jonathan Richman
The walls and lockers of punk rock's past are lined with magazine pull-out posters of Jonathan Richman. Why not? He was straight before McKay, made wit and snark a cornerstone of indie rock, and combined his enduring embodiment of the past into the future of rock effortlessly. At this point in his life -- a completely anti-Internet old school musician of a considerable age, all things considered -- he has acquired enough life experiences to be honestly struggling, to be having doubts, to be absolutely startled by the way mortality can rear its head so suddenly, without concern for your state of mind.
New Release Tuesday: Pseudosix, Aesop Rock & Modern Lovers
Pseudosix Pseudosix (Sonic Boom) Pseudosix began as Tim Perry's solo project, but quickly became a group effort with Emil Amos (Grails, Dolorean), Joe Kelly, and a handful of other local, talented friends. The band has written and recorded with pals from Joggers, Decemberists and The Standard in their relatively short existence, but the impetus has been barreling towards this release since back in the day when Perry wrestled with the nerve to perform live,...

Music Preview: Jonathan Richman Is Gonna Rock, Rock, Rock Nonstop Tonight (And Tomorrow)
Jonathan Richman is many things to many people. To the casual observer, he's the upbeat and silly troubadour featured in There's Something About Mary and on Conan O'Brien. For music nerds, he's the architect of "Roadrunner," a three-chord classic that is sometimes referred to as the first punk song. David Bowie covers his tunes, Lou Reed considers him a friend, and legions of indie-rockers were inspired by him. But none of this truly gives...
Concert Update: The Roots, Merle Haggard, Four Tet, And So Much More
Now that we're in mid-January, club bookings for winter and spring shows are beginning to emerge. While much internet browsing has already been done looking for the SXSW 2007 lineup, there are also plenty of great touring shows dropping in outside of those dates (thankfully). New shows from The Roots, Explosions In The Sky, Midlake, and a Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard double bill top the new additions, but there is plenty here for all musical...
