Austin author, entertainer, and all-around Renaissance man Owen Egerton is finally receiving some formal recognition for all of his hard work and hijinks. He's one of this year's two Best of Austin "Best Authors," in no small part due to his darkly-comedic book of short stories, How To Best Avoid Dying, released earlier this year by Austin-based Dalton Publishing. Egerton tied for the prestigious award with journalist-turned-punk-rocker-Texas-Rollergirl Melissa "Melicious" Joulwan. Her bruiser of a memoir,......

*The views expressed in The Laurie Show are those of the author and do not represent Austinist as a whole.* -ed. note Photos of Mice & Rifles, and Ringo Deathstarr. With the exception of unmerciful allergy issues (sniff), I've been having a great time rounding up ideas to inspire this evening's escapades on The Laurie Show on KUT 90.5. Just give me several boxes of tissue - with aloe, please - and I'll be......

KVRX continues to go from strength to strength in the oft-shifting landscape of independent music. The student radio station for UT at Austin broadcasts on 91.7 FM (at certain times) while also streaming online at all times. KVRX’s mantra of “None of the Hits, All of the Time” has always held a soft spot in our hearts and their Local Live broadcast every Sunday night at 10pm usually showcases a quality act in its rawest......

The rumors, it turns out, are true: the Sinus Show, Austin's beloved institution of comedy paired with really cheesy films, is calling it quits after six extraordinary years. Citing personal issues, the trio will perform their last shows--Diehard, ironically--tonight and tomorrow evening at the Drafthouse Downtown. In more bad news, all remaining performances are already sold out. From the Sinus Show guys: "After six incredibly fun years the Sinus Show is performing its last......

Cinco de Mayo this year happens to coincide with No Pants Day, the one day of the year when it's actually appropriate -- encouraged, even -- for all of us who aren't Leslie to stroll around downtown in your skivvies. What's the idea behind it all? Not a whole lot, other than seeing huge crowds of "students, respectable businessmen, or cherished community leaders" showing off their ghaostly thighs. Also, they're hoping that you'll "take your......

Interesting art extravaganzas and south Austin seem to go together very well. We're excited about this one, the Art Outside community art show, since it brings together many of our favorites all into the beautiful natural setting of the 3-acre South Austin Enchanted Forest. The show is back for its second year, with "over 200 visual and performing artists to lay the foundation for a revolutionary and one-of-a-kind artistic endeavor." It will feature sculptures,......

It seems the lovely fashionistas behind ATX Magazine have been a busy bunch. Drawing off the success of their Fashion Mixer, they've lined up three days worth of events, each packed with music and fashion so hot they should consider moving the afterparty to Barton Springs. To top it off, each event will have a donation center were you can bring clothing, non-perishable foods, or cash gifts. There will also be chair massages from......

Swing by the Carousel Lounge (1110 E. 52nd St.) tomorrow (April 19th) if you wanna laugh yer ass off. Improv comedy troupe TIGHT is performing, along with some musical accompaniment from The Sinus Show’s Jerm Pollet, the Elastic Waste Band, and the Total Foxes. The show starts at 9pm and will be followed by a cuh-razy game of Family Feud. We doubt Richard Dawson will be there, but word on the street is that a......
