Recession notwithstanding, Valentine’s remains one of the busiest nights for dining of the year. Austin360 correspondent and former Austinist editor Matthew Odam did the work for us and called around to some of the city's best restaurants, checking out which still had some tables left. There's slim pickings this late in the game, but act now and you just might get lucky in your quest to, you know, get lucky.
He’s a master of sampling and an early proponent of turntablism, but you won’t find Carl Stone working with Kanye any time soon. Instead, throughout his musical career, minimalist pioneer Stone has taken experimented with electronics and sound in a way that recalls his hero John Cage and other irrepressible avant-garde musicians of his ilk.
Artists, take note: When in doubt about how to price your work, go high.
How is it possibly November already? Time flies we suppose, when you're out there putting it on the line to make your way in this world today. And to be honest, it takes everything ya' got. So wouldn't you like to take a break, from all your worries?! We certainly would, it sure would help a lot, but unfortunately we have to keep gathering the best of last week's Missed Connections so that you...
Sip 'N' Stroll: As a warm-up for next spring's Hill Country Wine and Food Festival, the organization is sponsoring a very enjoyable-sounding Sip 'N' Stroll event at three of The Domain's new restaurants. The concept is simple: you wander from restaurant to restaurant in groups, and each of them serves you a flight of wines and some paired appetizers. NoRTH features Italian eats, so naturally they'll be focusing on Italy's wine varietals. Regan Jasper, the...
Maybe it’s an aftereffect of the heat and shoulder-to-shoulder swaying at ACL, but we’re feeling particularly groovy today. The Austin Cinematheque understands, as it’s all peace, love, and Brigitte Bardot in tonight’s screening of Contempt at the Texas Union Theatre. Okay, so not so much with the peace. Director Jean-Luc Godard takes on the shady world of filmmaking and the lengths one must go through to see an artistic vision through to the bitter...
Luciano Pavarotti, widely regarded as the world's finest living tenor, passed away this morning at his home in Italy. Pavarotti had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2006, and was hospitalized in August of this year as a result of ongoing struggles with the disease. Known as the 'King of High Cs,' Pavarotti popularized opera and classical music more than any of his contemporaries, particularly in the U.S., bringing the genre to the forefront of American...
The Clean Energy Venture Summit, which took place in Austin earlier this week, brought together civic leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, and energy industry experts to promote the so-called "Utility of the Future." Yesterday, one of the vendors participating in the summit showed off a radical new all-electric scooter that's taking a cue from the latest batch of electric cars to hit the market. The Vectrix electric "Maxi-Scooter" is touted as the first electric scooter to...
Back in early 2006, foodies were abuzz about the pizzas and Italian food products on offer at Mandola's Market on 47th Street. The shop fast became a neighborhood mainstay and maintains a loyal following. When we recently became aware that they were also planning a combination winery and restaurant venture in Driftwood (home of The Salt Lick), we contacted Mandola Estates hospitality head Lynn Zeller to find out more. The upshot of our talk:...

15. Mogwai - Mr. Beast (Matador) As ever, Mogwai manage to blend unadulterated post-rock weight to their shoegazer tendencies with tracks like "Glasgow Mega Snake" and "Folk Death 95," showcasing their ability to create anthems with no words. This is where Mr. Beast really shines, in between blistering chord progressions and gradual swings into corybantic climaxes. In some ways a throwback to earlier (and heavier) Mogwai material, Mr. Beast isn't merely a rock album....

- His plan worked!! A judge tossed Ken Lay's conviction. He is now free to rise from the dead and roam freely.
- A 54-year-old Violinist sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl he met at band camp.
- Parmesan Cheese is the most stolen item in Italy. Anyone know the most commonly stolen item in the US? We're thinking it isn't cheese.
- We are internet addicts.
- After surpassing the 300 million population mark on Tuesday, we're still unhappy.
- You gotta be a real idiot or just have a case of retinitis pigmentosa to punch a hole in a $139 million Picasso.
- Stonehenge was just a gathering place in Neolithic Suburbia.
- We can't wait until 3000! When the important things in life will be grander.
- Chris Rock's mom was a victim of discrimination by a Cracker Barrell restaurant. Yeah, Cracker Barrell doesn't discriminate like Wal-Mart doesn't sling cheap, plastic crap.
If you're in the mood for free olive and olive oil tastings, demonstrations by local chefs, and a reason to eat rich food and drink good wines in the middle of the day, Texas Culinary Academy, Central Market and Slowfood Austin will host Austin's first Mediterranean Festival this Saturday from Noon-4pm at the Texas Culinary Academy campus.
It's common knowledge. You don't talk about a guy's mom or his sister. Unless, of course, you're playing the dozens with Truecraig on a street corner after a night of heavy drinking.
First things first. Alamo Drafthouse EAT DRINK WATCH MOVIES events pretty much always kick ass, but the bar just may have been raised with the upcoming showing of Stephen Chow’s God of Cookery, loosely based on Japanese wundershow Iron Chef. Alamo South Lamar Exec Chef John Bullington and Alamo Village Exec Chef Trish Eichelberger face off Wednesday, August 30 at 7pm at The Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar. The stakes? The title of Alamo Iron...
We remember the things our friends used to dare us to eat—dog kibble, crayons, congealed bacon grease—and that was just last month. We also remember the last time we won a bet (thank you, Italy), and the last time we felt social pressure to fit in (henna tattoos can look real if done professionally). That’s why the screen adaptation of Thomas Rockwell’s book, How To Eat Fried Worms is something we’ve been waiting for since we heard about the thousands of Austin actors who showed up for the open casting call last summer.
With our wine loving in-laws in town for the month of July, there were plenty of opportunities to drink bargain wines. After all, when you're sitting on the back porch nightly with a glass or two of red each for four people, those $25 bottles just aren't a fiscally sound option. This led to the pleasant discovery that there are many great bottles at the $10 point on the shelves of Austin's wine sellers....
LOCAL: The NAACP of Austin and the Texas Civil Rights project have sued the state and Travis County over electronic voting machines. They claim that E-Slate voting machines violate the state election code because they don't provide a paper record of the vote transaction. STATE: A federal judge has ruled that former U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay must remain on the ballot for the 22nd Congressional District race. It seems DeLay's little scheme to temporarily...

One week gone and all the teams have taken the pitch. The Americans are awful and Ecuador is one of the few surprises thus far. I just returned from the streets of Munich, where the party is on. Oliver Neuville´s last minute goal to beat Poland has, in all likelihood, sent the Germans to the next round and has their fans going berserk. The Giselsstrasse is flooded with people burning flares and singing the praise of their heroes. It´s awesome!

Yet another trip to Taverna has us convinced that Robert Montez is a front-of-the-house genius. Chef Andrea Volpi treated us to a deliriously intoxicating risotto made from mushrooms sent to him by his mother, Giovanna, who lives in Milan. As in Milan, Italy, y'all. Seriously, we’re not worthy. Bust down the doors at Central Market and hoard as much double-sweet corn from Florida as you can. It’s so sweet, we wanted to tell you...
We’re dying from the heat. No, seriously. Luckily, we recently ran into one of our favorite wine experts, Twin Liquors’ Tim Graham, who implored us not to forget to drink the white wine this summer. “Tim!” we screamed at him with weak, limp voices. “What should we drink to ease the pain of this summer ache?” Tim replied quickly, “Campustella Albarino from Spain. It’s not effervescent but it dances on the tongue.” We asked...
Starting this Friday, Austinist has yet another perfect excuse for getting out of the city for a day and enjoying the nearby hill country: Clifford's Original Wine Bar is opening its doors. [Visit Clifford's Website] Built in a clearing on the rolling hills of Wimberley, just minutes from Wimberley Square (roughly 40 minutes from Travis Heights), Clifford's Original stocks a fabulous selection of wines both domestic and international, with a well-represented assortment of reds and...
(Ed. Note: If you’ve paid even the slightest bit of attention while out and about around Austin’s many parks, you’ve noticed that we’re a fairly big soccer town. Men’s leagues, women’s leagues, co-ed leagues, indoor leagues, etc. thrive all around town. With that in mind, we thought we’d bring you a preview of the biggest sporting event in the world, the World Cup. One of the hosts of KOOP radio’s Soccer Mad, and friend of...
We went to Carnaval. And loved it. SXSW full list of bands and movies updated. Cat Power backs out of SXSW and cancels tour. Ausitn art goes green. Tired of run-of-the-mill valentine's day activities? We got you covered. We reviewed the new documentary The Outdoorsmen: Blood, Sweat and Beers. And laughed our asses off. For about $600 in fees, your band can play a showcase at Waterloo Records during SXSW. The week in interviews:...
We once had the good fortune of living in Italy, and there are times we miss it terribly. What is it we miss, you ask? The emasculated, gelled-hair twenty-something guys on their mopeds smoking cigarettes and pleading on the cell phones with their mothers to let them stay out just another hour so they can sit around the fountain in Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere and butcher Nirvana/Bob Marley songs on an acoustic guitar? Not so much.
