In 2001, Californian Hans Boas set out on a road trip to Austin to teach German classes at The University of Texas when he stopped by Fredericksburg, the modest Hill Country town known for its good food, great shopping, and strong German heritage. Over lunch, he overheard a conversation spoken in an "interesting sounding German," a dialect that incorporated English words and English phrases, but was pronounced in a distinctly German accent. Investing further,...
Okay, okay—so it's not that big a deal that the Alamo Downtown is relocating. All it really means is that we have to walk a few extra blocks to get there, which, quite frankly, will be good for our waistline. Plus, there'll be more seating and bigger screens, so we guess we'll learn to cope. But we're definitely sad to see the old theatre go; we've spent a lot of nights eating, drinking, laughing, cheering...
A father and son were walking home from church last night in the Capital Plaza area (around Cameron Rd. and Reinli) when they were robbed. After taking everything the immigrant family had on them, the robbers shot and killed the teenage boy, in front of his father. Good news: Texan lawmakers propose package of sweeping reforms, important enough to hit the national section of the New York Times! Bad news: Said reforms are all aimed toward stripping illegal immigrants of their rights and humanity. Oh, well. We might soon be able to recharge our wireless devices wirelessly (that means no more fighting over outlets at Starbucks). Is there anything Nikola Tesla can't do? iPhone. Surprised? Last night we were watching Treasure Hunters (yeah, yeah) when a crawling message from KXAN popped up at the bottom of the screen saying that a SWAT team had opened up the neighborhood that they had previously closed off. Hello?! Apparently there was a standoff outside a duplex in North Austin yesterday afternoon which resulted in the arrest of nine people. Immigration officials have taken over the case, hinting at charging these people with...
We know how you love to support local artists. It's our primary raison d’être and the reason you keep coming back to Austinist. With that in mind, we wanted to let you now about a small film opening this weekend at the Dobie. Fall to Grace is an independent film that was shot entirely in Austin and features music from local musicians (Travis Weller & Jonathan Meiburg). University of Texas graduate Mari Marchbanks attempts to weave a story of redemption with her screenplay that features an array of characters battling life's obstacles to gain a sense of their own identities - immigrants trying desperately to assimilate, girls gone bad fighting for a fresh start and fractured families hoping to save themselves. The story, much of which is seemingly unbelievable due to the lack of depth of characters you have seen portrayed better in other films, ambles through much of the film and lacks the emotional gravitas for which Marchbanks aims. It ends up feeling like Lifetime commissioned Stepehen Gaghan to write a script in about 90 minutes.

It has recently come to our attention that, like your old crusty uncle who's too mean to die, the John Birch Society, which spent those good old Red Scare years faithfully outing pinkos and defending our borders, is still crouched in the corner in a rocking chair, issuing periodic proclamations about them damn immigrants and the necessity of keeping our precious national bodily fluids pure.
Vince Young has caught a lot of flack for hiring Major Adams, a family friend, to be his agent. One of the few cool people paying attention to the Stanley Cup Playoffs? There have been a couple surprising wins in round two of this series. We hope it stays this exciting. The Senate is really close to finalizing the controversial immigration bill. The proposed bill separates illegal immigrants into three categories and just seems like it will be a big mess. A teacher who kept a 40mm shell on his desk as a fancy-schmancy paperweight, tried to squish a bug with it and blew off his hand instead. We are hoping the bug survived because, now, we believe in karma. We think, that between "M^!*#r...
