Local NBC affiliate KXAN announced today that it may be taken off of Time Warner Cable's broadcast service in early October if current contract re-negotiations don't work out. The station, which has been around since the 1960s, is part of parent company LIN TV, which owns local stations around the country.

The Lonesome Heroes have recently initiated a weekly residency at Headhunter's to showcase Austin’s alt-country offerings. Appropriately titled the Alt Country Showcase, the communion occurs every Wednesday with an agenda to build a practical platform for the genre’s oft-scattered acts and create a unified arena for the emergence of new talent. The latest bill features the country sounds of six piece The Skeletons, as well as Leo Rondeau’s Americana anthems. Supporting will be the Low Down Family String Band, and of course, The Heroes will headline the event with their brand of indie-folk-country. The band aspires to “revolutionize country music in America” as per their MySpace page and we could not be more excited about this development.

If you’re looking to have your funny bone tickled this weekend and you can’t get us on our cell phone, head on over to The Hideout Theater for the Out-of-Bounds Comedy Festival. We checked it out last night, and as you would expect, some groups were stronger than others. Both the upstairs and downstairs stages run acts simultaneously. Last night there was improv upstairs and sketch comedy downstairs. The absurd and cute Rat Girl and her friend shared emcee duties downstairs. The highlight of the downstairs show last night was a group called The Plurals. The three young men who comprise the troupe mixed short video presentations and sketches to provide the near sold-out crowd with headscratching belly-laughs. We headed upstairs to catch the last improv group which was Jesters Ink from Richmond, VA. And not to put too fine a point on it, but they were horrible. It was pretty much beyond description. But with mid-sized festivals such as this, you can expect some laughs and some bombs. Regardless, it was good to see such strong crowds showing up to support these artists. Highlights for the weekend shows include Austin’s own Girls Girls Girls,a unique musical improv act, and local favorites Heroes of Comedy.

Billy Joe Shaver is one of America's greatest songwriters and a true Texas legend, just ask him. He penned such classic as “Ride Me Down Easy,” Black Rose,” and “Honky Tonk Heroes.” He appears on Fresh Air today to discuss his music career, having a heart attack on stage at Gruene Hall, his dogs and the loss of his son to an alleged heroin overdose. He tells the story of how Willie Nelson and future Governor of Texas Kinky Friedman helped him through the loss of his son. The interview is a can’t-miss for fans of Texas music.
