Unassuming, unnerving and unsigned, Haunting Oboe Music is ready to, as they say, take your face by storm. The Austin indie experimental rock outfit is so obsessed with music making that they released 12 EPs in 2008, one for each month of the year. The band said the experiment sent them in many directions and provided many ups and downs, but turned out to be the best thing Haunting Oboe Music could have possibly done. The project gave them a deep catalog of songs to choose from for live shows. A live listening is the best way to experience the mystic madness, since the recordings don't quite do the Oboes justice.

They clucked their tongues and said it couldn't be done, but Haunting Oboe Music is doing it. 2008 has these Austin indie-experimental stalwarts release an EP every single month of the damned year, but before you roll your eyes and dismiss them as overambitious twats, read this: they're knocking it out of the park. The production is fantastic, the ideas are as fresh as a tipsy Italian exchange student, and the songs - while maddeningly diverse - keep you guessing.

If you’re in the mood to delve into the music of some fine local acts, you will not want to miss SureFire Media + Promotion’s latest event at Antone’s tonight. When we last checked in with them, we learnt of their plans to bring fresh faces to the historic venue on 5th St. Thursday’s bill features four exciting bands primed for their moment of glory in the Live Music Capital. Haunting Oboe Music has been ubiquitous in the past year, playing everywhere, from The Parlor up north to the Do512 Compound down south, and almost every Red River venue in between. The ambitious band plans to drop an EP every month this year; you can read our review for January’s h here and buy it, along with the February, March, and April releases at Waterloo Records or via iTunes. The Fever Dreams’ experimental psychedelic concoctions are intriguing to the say the least, with numerous twists and turns throughout. The outfit’s versatile creations can be found on last year’s Tregan of Polycorns, also available at Waterloo Records, as well as End of an Ear and Cheapo Discs.

Austin's Haunting Oboe Music have been playing together for about two years, and until recently, they had only had one EP to show for it. For 2008, they've made a resolution to put an end to that kind of thing: the band is going to release an EP each month this year.

Emo’s, as always, powers our evenings with a good amount of solid shows this weekend. Zookeeper and Zykos bring heartfelt indie-rock to the outside stage on Friday while Ume and Haunting Oboe Music take on the inside crowd with belligerent, experimental rock n’ roll.

SureFire Media + Promotion along with Do512.com and yours truly present a kick-ass show at Antone’s this week that supercedes all bad-ass shows. A quadruple line-up of fast emerging local acts takes over the famous 4th St. venue this Thursday evening to offer a wide range of pop, rock, and beyond.

As Christmas approaches, good shows tend to get sporadic and good friends tend to leave town, but the promise of Emo’s Free Week will carry us into the empty canvas that is 2008. Still, we have ten days or so to find that one last good moment of 2007.

Ringo Deathstarr auteur Elliott Frazier has had a banner year: having soldiered on through countless lineup changes, the band managed to release the best shoegaze record of the year (well, EP), earned a coveted slot among The Onion AV Club's Worst Band Names of the Year (scroll down a page or so), and head out for an east coast tour in February (nothing to put in parentheses here)! You can wish them well tonight at Emo's where they'll play with their pals in La Snacks, plus Haunting Oboe Music and Fever Dreams. Also, Merry Christmas!

They're taking over the warehouse compound adjacent to an old abandoned graveyard on South Lamar, and bringing in Markus with a K, Haunting Oboe Music, DJ Thibault, and Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears. *The views expressed in The Laurie Show are those of the author and do not represent Austinist as a whole.* -ed. note My apologies for my absenteeism, kids! Johnny Goudie and his new band, the Little Champions, will be performing at the Beauty Bar tonight for the first time ever. He's been working on a new album with the new band, enlisting the help of Lomita's Jonas Wilson behind the board. Sound-wise, Goudie's brit-pop influence is his greatest asset, mixing the sounds of early Suede with more contemporary this-side-of-the-pond pop sensibilities. Melodic, atmospheric rock tempered with rock star swagger and a mean pair...

What’s in a name? (I think Abraham Lincoln said that.) The answer is, not much, especially if your band sucks, which it probably does. (I said that.) Still, picking a good band name from the rapidly dwindling supply of word combinations available can be a tricky business, fraught with dead ends, desperation, and 31 flavors of WTF?. Therefore, I’m inaugurating a monthly edition of Hots On called, mmhmm, Band Slam!, wherein I attempt to...

Besides playing numerous shows in and around town, they have been in the studio recording their debut full-length (You Love This), chock full of blistering synth pop-rock no doubt.
