KUT's Laurie Gallardo dishes about local bands
We've asked KUT's Laurie Gallardo, host of Before the Break and a new local music program on Friday evenings, to join our staff as a guest contributor. She'll be sharing with us the many Austin- and Texas-based bands that she's been listening to. Enjoy! -- The Editors First and foremost, I must express my undying gratitude to all the peeps, including the Austinist, who’ve provided their support, and for promoting my new on-air gig....
There was a time, in the days before gentle, melodic, feeling-laden indie music, that rock n’ roll was all about being loud, ugly, and only a little bit talented. You remember: Iggy Pop didn’t have to be sensitive or good looking to pick up women, he just had to spit and snarl. Johnny Rotten didn’t even need the women; he just spit and snarled for the hell of it. And while there are surely those...

Marshall Escamilla and Emily Summerfield are the dynamic duo behind Stem and Leaf Records, Austin's latest indie record label that launched during SXSW Interactive earlier this year. This weekend, they're throwing a CD release show for The Interest Kills at the historic Victory Grill, with Happy Families, The Total Foxes, and Red Leaves ... and a spelling bee! We had a chat with Emily and Marshall this week, in advance of the show. Read on! So where'd you guys get the idea to start a record label? E: Well, one day I was talking to Marshall on the phone (this was when I was still living in Indiana), and he asked if I would like to start a record label. So there's that, but of course, there's more to it that just that. I love music but don't play any instruments, so I've always sort of secretly wanted to do something like this. M: I got the idea when I was watching a friend of mine play a show in Chicago while we were on tour. She was doing this really great stuff, and I knew that she wouldn't do much to support it. So I thought, "Man, I should start a label just to help her get her music out there." And then, my band came up with the idea to write a Zombie Rock Opera, and I felt like we needed to do something to get it the support it needed. So we started a label. And what are your backgrounds? E: We're both English majors. Marshall teaches, and most of my work experience has been in libraries. M: Yup.
