Happy Birthday, Woven Bones and More at United States Art Authority [Giveaway]

Happy Birthday, Woven Bones and More at United States Art Authority [Giveaway]

Brattleboro, Vermont might not be the first place that comes to mind when you hear Happy Birthday's catchy, guitar-driven pop - the small community is known for its vibrant local arts scene and chilly winters, if it's known for anything at all. But the trio, who last year signed to Sub Pop Records, craft pop gems out of sweet vocal harmonies, jangly guitars and alt-rock riffs. The band was slapdashed together for one show in late 2008 when guitarist and singer Kyle Thomas wanted backup for some new songs he'd written on his own. It went well: Sub Pop signed them four performances later. Their self-titled debut album came out in March on the heels of their first single, the eminently catchy "Girls FM". more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Peel, Fishboy, Poison Control Center

On Wednesday at the Salvage Vanguard theatre, a character named Ethan Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele stripped down to his bathing suit, donned a hat and colorful lei, and then stood on his amp to proclaim, via song, “I heard noise-pop is in.” You know Ethan, you might be right. And leading the fray are none other than our own Peel, a magnanimously kick-ass band whose bits of unbridled feedback and synthesizer explosions are balanced with a collective appreciation for the types of melodies that make ears smile. With some out-of-town friends, Peel will play The Mohawk this Sunday as a fitting end to a great week of music. more ›

It rained on my wedding day, and I was not surprised.

We got our oil changed at the Jiffy Lube on Oltorf and 35 this morning.
