Extra Extra
DPS will let the neighbors know that an Austin couple (mentioned in yesterday's Extra Extra) are not sex offenders. Because of "grade issues" and injuries, Johnston High's football season may already be kaput. So teens can't vote? A former Texas Secretary of State thinks they should be able to work at the polls anyway. City of Austin releases schedule for free flu shots; check eligibility requirements. Some North Texas sex offenders arrested for posting...
Overheard at SXSW: What We Saw, What We Loved, And WTF?
Let's be honest: everyone loves SXSW week, but when it ends, you are secretly very ready to move on. Before we do, let's take a look at some of the isolated, crazy, and wonderful moments that make SXSW such an over-the-top sensory experience. – The dude at Girl Talk dancing with a broken pinata on his head. Then passing said pinata to someone else to dance with. – Isaac Hayes talking in his famous...

Guest ColumnIST: The Laurie Show
The following is a weekly column by guest contributor Laurie Gallardo. Hear her Friday evenings on KUT 90.5FM -- The Editors Greetings, chilly willies. I will now quote something I heard this morning from the esteemed producer of In Black America on KUT, John L. Hanson, Jr. Mr. Hanson is someone I hold in very high regard. Everyone should. To put it as succinctly as possible, he is a bad ass. This morning in...
Austinist Preview & Giveaway: Social Distortion @ Stubb's Tonight!
Seminal O.C. gutter punk icon Mike Ness has been fucking the Man for almost 30 years. He's done all the stuff punk kids nowadays try to emulate—drug addiction, erratic behavior, jail time. And a rival punk rocker even bit off part of his ear, Tyson-style, in a fight. Further, we heard he eats 100th wave wannabe suburban Blink 182 boys for breakfast. Ness's band Social Distortion has released six studio recordings, enduring a revolving cast, a few breaks for solo projects, a stint on a major label, and the tragic death of a founding member, bassist-turned-guitarist Dennis Danell. Social D's, Sex, Love and Rock and Roll, came out in 2004, and Ness and Co. plan to release a seventh studio full-length in 2007.

Tapes 'n Tapes: An Austinist Inter/Review
Out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tapes ‘n Tapes furnish listeners with the freshest of fresh in the contemporary American soundscape. Their full-length debut, The Loon, is a wonder of self-production that they marketed and distributed themselves. Freshly inked with XL records and ready to embark on a summer tour, this crew is trill, no doubt. There are few bands that are worthy of the major media attention and hype that’s been directed at these guys; for once, there’s some substance behind the buzz.
