Savory Dreams: Hamburger Bed For Sale on eBay

That's right, the Hamburger Bed is for sale on eBay. Inspired by the 1986 movie, Hamburger: The Motion Picture, in which dorm room beds were hamburgers, Austinite Kayla Kromer cooked one up for herself. More accurately a Cheeseburger Bed, the handcrafted original quickly became an internet sensation and has appeared in seven magazines. After months of warding off would be buyers, Kromer sites a series of personal setbacks requiring her to make sacrifices as the reason she is finally willing to sell her masterpiece. Since the burger is large (8 feet in diameter!), Kromer is nor arranging for shipping, which puts Austin area residents at a great advantage should they want to sleep between a slice of memory foam American Cheese and a sesame seed bun. more ›

Saturday Night: All Hamburger, No Helper!*

Saturday Night: All Hamburger, No Helper!*

Maybe you’ve been wondering whether or not you actually have a sense of humor lately. Like everyone else is laughing at jokes or sketched comedic situations, but you’re just sitting there all awkwardly quiet, like a turd in an ice machine. Maybe you’ve become a sour puss with no more feeling for the silliness of the world around you. Maybe you’ve wasted away into that clichéd armchair cynic who pisses all over everything to... more ›

A Hawk and a Hacksaw and a Cool Show

A Hawk and a Hacksaw and a Cool Show

This show has been canceled due to the on-going ice storm. -ed. Emo's Lounge, in its relative infancy, has already come into its own as a indie-rock venue unafraid of breaking the mold to host more diverse acts. We've seen some great shows, drank our share of reasonably priced drinks, and used the rather odd restrooms, thus far being more than satisfied with the place. Tonight will be no different, with a great lineup... more ›

Central Market Hatches Another Genius Event

Central Market Hatches Another Genius Event

There are dubious Hatches, like Survivor Winner Richard Hatch (BOO!). And there are good Hatches, like the delicious namesake chile peppers grown in Hatch, New Mexico (YAY!). The Hatch Chile Pepper Festival at Central Market (this weekend and next) is to food nerds what American Idol is to, well, nerds. Every year we go and stuff carts full of specialty products made from peppers from Hatch, New Mexico (Hatch hot dog buns, Hatch pesto,... more ›

Austinist Interviews Michael Pollan, Author of The Omnivore's Dilemma

We’ve all wondered what’s really in our fast-food hamburger or whether the snack cake we got out of the office machine has any ingredients found in nature. But Michael Pollan really, really wanted to know. So he traced the origin of four meals back to their source: a corn field, a grassy pasture, an industrial organic farm, and a forest. Along the way he made some surprising discoveries about what we eat and how we’ve come to have what he calls “a national eating disorder.” Pollan documented his journey to the center of the American food system in an immensely readable, thoroughly fascinating book The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals. more ›

Austinist Interview: The Devil and Daniel Johnston Director, Jeff Feuerzeig

You are a self-professed Daniel Johnston obsessive. Can you remember when you first heard about Daniel Johnston? I was a college radio DJ [in New Jersey], and word was trickling up from Austin, Texas, through this underground network of people--before there was an internet—through fanzine culture. I was reading a lot of fanzines, which was an underground publishing network. Word was trickling up through this network of a few hundred people around the country from... more ›

"I Want 'em Real Thick and Juicy": Austinist Celebrates National Burger Month

It seems everything and everyone is getting their own national month these days. This month alone, Barbecue; Bikes; Eggs; Hamburgers; Physical Fitness & Sports; and Salsa all get their time to shine. Nothing the overrated food item eggs need more than their own damn month, after already single-handedly trying to take down the taco industrial complex. But we digress. As all of these categories own a special place in Austinist's heart, we will be doing... more ›

Drinks and Snacks: The Unauthorized Biography

Drinks and Snacks: The Unauthorized Biography

Everyone ballyhoos Austin's status as live music capitol of the world, but the pink elephant in the room that no chamber of commerce or visitors bureau would ever touch is that fact that Austinites truly like to get their drink on. More than that, they like their drinks served with snacks. You know it's true. A few quick thoughts as we approach the summer drankin' and snackin' season: In the category of best junk... more ›

We Like Big Burgers, and We Can Not Lie!

We Like Big Burgers, and We Can Not Lie!

We love hamburgers…a lot! That’s why we were pretty excited to see a new kid on the block in the form of P. Terry’s Burger Stand . The burger stand, owned by namesake Patrick Terry, opened about 2-3 weeks ago and is located on Lamar, just north of Barton Springs Rd. As its name states, this is a burger “stand” not a restaurant, but there are some picnic tables adjacent to the stand, if... more ›

God Bless Hut's Indeed

Unless you just moved here, you know about Hut's Hamburgers, the bigger than a hole-in-the-wall but not really big, kinda divey but not really divey hamburger joint on 6th Street near Lamar. Austinist forgets about it a lot, but sometimes we get this huge Hut's craving, which is why this weekend we found ourselves sitting in a booth among the college pendants, sipping our gallon of soda and eagerly waiting (is that our food? is that our food?). more ›

New Music Recommendations...

Better late than never, here are our picks for the week... Auetechre – Untitled Being called everything from “frighteningly good” to “rhythmically taxing, melodically lacking and generally unnerving.” You decide. Elkland – Golden Because we know you secretly aren’t tired of this 80’s dance revival thing. So it comes as no surprise that these boys are currently opening up for Erasure.
