On Thursday night the eclectic nine-piece ensemble Gogol Bordello brought their theatrical and carnivalesque stage show to a sold-out audience at Stubb’s. With an early start, their nearly two-hour set had invigorated fans bouncing around with the oompah accordion while shirtless frontman Eugene Hütz belted lyrics, danced about, and enthusiastically orchestrated with his bottle of wine between sips. The relentless collective energy of fans and the fanciful Gypsy-rock band lead to four encores before Hütz bid adoring fans farewell, promising to return as soon as possible. more ›

For anyone just arriving to ACL halfway through the day in time to catch the opening of Gogol Bordello’s set, there are much worse ways to start off your weekend. From Gypsy punk to singer/songwriter to world musician to Talking Head, the AT&T Stage on Friday, September 26th at this year’s Austin City Limits will host a wide range of talent. The music begins later in the morning, but the final act, Manu Chao, closes out the evening as the night’s final band at 8:30 p.m. As a stage reserved for some of the bigger acts, you’ve most likely heard these guys, or at least heard of them. If neither, well then maybe you should bring a blanket and a smile and plant yourself up front for the duration for some aural edification. more ›

While not always the case, most documentary filmmakers, as invested as they may become in their subjects, try to maintain a journalistic distance. We can assume that isn’t the case for The Pied Piper of Hutzovina, a film by Pavla Fleishcer about Gogol Bordello lead singer Eugene Hutz. In fact, the impetus for making the film was largely due to the fact that Fleischer fell in love with Hutz, and it charts a 2004 visit to Eastern Europe they made together. Hutz, a New Yorker who can chart his Gypsy lineage to his grandmother, travels across the Ukraine to share his music with family, friends, and strangers, and to rediscover his roots. more ›

With the geographic world continuing to shrink in the 21st century and the increased ease of travel and communication opening new doors every day, today’s musical landscape is constantly evolving. Instruments from other cultures have always been utilized in western music, but of late, world styles are making major dents in the indie scene. Be it Vampire Weekend’s African accentuation, M.I.A.’s Bollywood beats, or Beirut evoking adventures in far off lands, we have been privy to some choice innovations in this decade.
