We started Saturday over at the Orange Stage for the first-ever North American show by Keep Shelly in Athens, a Grecian duo (playing with a live drummer) dabbling in airy, electronic beats and spaced-out guitar to create gloomy, down-tempo electronica that still manages to be danceable.

Five Years of FFF Fest Photos - Part 5: 2006
Fun Fun Fun Fest burst into the world on an unusually cold December weekend, but the bands compensated by playing extra hard. Steve Hopson captured the sights including The Octopus Project, Spoon, Peaches, Riverboat Gamblers, Circle Jerks and the Black Angels.
Five Years of FFF Fest Photos - Part 4: 2007
Today, in Part 4 of our 5-part Fun Fun Fun Fest photo album, we look back to 2007 when F3Fest was only two years old. This year the Fest's stages were rocked by the Murder City Devils, Sick of it All, Angry Samoans, The Sword, Cat Power and the New Pornographers.
Five Years of FFF Fest Photos - Part 3: 2008
Our five-part photo album of FFF Fest's formative years continues today with a look at 2008. Rocking Waterloo Park this year was Leftöver Crack, St. Vincent, Octopus Project, DOA, the Yuppie Pricks and Cro-Mags. Our photos again come from a troll through Steve Hopson's music photo archive.
Five Years of FFF Fest Photos - Part 2: 2009
In Part 2 of our 5-part look back at Steve Hopson's Fun Fun Fun Fest photos we revisit 2009, the year of Melt Banana, Shonen Knife, Les Savy Fav, Mika Miko, Neon Indian and Street Dogs.
Five Years of FFF Fest Photos - Part 1: 2010
Now that Fun Fun Fun Fest is all grown up and moved to South Austin, we surfed through Steve Hopson's photo archive to put together a five part look back at her preschool years. Up first is 2010, the year of The Casualties, Peelander-Z, RJD2, MGMT and "Weird Al" Yankovic. The series continues next week with Leftöver Crack, St. Vincent, Octopus Project, Shonen Knife, New Pornographers and Circle Jerks.
Changes of Faith, Bucket Lists Bands and Reigns of Blood [Fun Fun Fun Fest Memory]
For me, Fun Fun Fun Fest 2010 brought about what amounts to a change of musical faith. I used to be the guy who hates large outdoor festivals. I thought that they were far from ideal situations for bands and audiences, and that in large, vibrant music communities like Austin, music fans should just stick with seeing great artists perform in smaller venues. Fun Fun Fun turned me into a true believer in the value of large, outdoor, multi-day music festivals. I had one of the best live music experiences of my life, and look forward to this year's Reign in Blood at Auditorium Shores.
Fun Fun Fun Fest, In Which Beer, Fun and Ass are Everywhere [Fun Fun Fun Fest Memory]
For one reason or another, I've always associated Fun Fun Fun Fest with narrow misses.
Metal Up Your Austin [Fun Fun Fun Fest Memory]
Fun Fun Fun Fest not only books bands you love, but also boasts that rare precognitive power to book bands that you never imagined you would love, but wind up loving all the same. It's spooky like that.
First Wave of Fun Fun Fun Fest Tickets On Sale Tomorrow
June 1st marks not just the day that your rent is due, but an occasion when your wallet may be tugged by a more pressing need to spend. Fun Fun Fun Fest's first run of tickets - codename FUN 1 - go on sale tomorrow. This year is FFFest's first year at Auditorium Shores, and though we're still guessing as to the line-up, years past have set an awesome precedent. To register for FUN1, head over to this now-dormant Fun Fun Fun website.
Fun Fun Fun Fest Moves to Auditorium Shores
In advance of its sixth year, Transmission Entertainment's Fun Fun Fun Fest has announced a big move away from Waterloo Park and into the larger digs afforded by Auditorium Shores. This year's festival will take place the weekend of November 5th and 6th, with a kick-off show scheduled for the fourth.
As befits the ambitious move, the festival itself will grow in scope. The press release sent out this morning also promises "new genres and performers...new on-site activities, comedy, food, shopping, and more."
Principal James Moody is quoted as saying, "After maxing out Waterloo Park last year, we realized we needed more space to deliver on some of our new ideas and offer our fans what they expect." Graham Williams, also of Transmission: “I am very excited about this. With more room and better access, we can do some of things that we could never do at Waterloo. We have been able to get more creative with bookings, production, layout, and vendors. I look forward to watching it all come together”.

Fun Fun Fun Fest Review: Chris Hardwick
Chris Hardwick makes a no doubt decent living from extensive television work, from his former gigs on MTV’s Singled Out and PBS’s Wired Science to his current position as host of Web Soup and a segment reviewing gadgets on Attack of the Show, both on the G4 network. Plus he voices Otis in Nickelodeon’s Back On the Barnyard, has appeared in a couple of Rob Zombie flicks, has a musical comedy duo called Hard ‘n Phirm, writes for Wired (the magazine) and has his own podcast entitled The Nerdist. He’s a busy boy.
Reminder: Local Music Is Sexy at The Mohawk [Tonight]
Before you hurl yourself headfirst into the magical weekend that awaits you at Waterloo Park, we’d like to remind you that the revelry actually commences tonight at The Mohawk with our semi-annual Local Music Is Sexy party.
Interviewing FFFFest: Sean Patton
Louisiana-born, Brooklyn-based comedian Sean Patton has been described as a "comic's comic," a stand up whose act favors personal storytelling over rapid-fire punchlines and a man who, despite all the Belushi comparisons, finds more humor in honest individuality than character-driven gags.
Sean's been seen on VH1 and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, he's worked with sketch heroes Derrick Comedy, and his fall tour with the Southern Comedy Quartet (alongside Nate Bargatze, Jarrod Harris, and Rory Scovel) was documented for an upcoming film; with such high-profile projects on his radar, what else could Patton possibly have time for? Only coming up with the most mind-boggling Halloween costume of all time and establishing a strict scientific method for categorizing comedy fans across the globe. That's right.
Catch Sean Sunday at 6 at Fun Fun Fun Fest, or Monday at 9:30 at The New Movement Theater.
Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Profile: Toro Y Moi
It’s not often you hear about an up-and-coming indie act out of Columbia, South Carolina. It’s not like we’re saying there’s anything wrong with the capital city of the Palmetto State, quite the opposite. At first glance, the city doesn’t appear to have a glowing indie scene, but lift up your ears and you’ll hear groups like Heist and the Accomplice, the high school band of Chazwick Bundick of Toro Y Moi, coming from the coffee shops and spots like the New Brookland Tavern.
Gowalla Fun Fest Trip: Win P.I.P. Passes For Sunday!
If you’ve been wondering what goes on in the P.I.P. area at Fun Fun Fun Fest, you’re in luck. Well, you’ll need a little bit of luck and the fortitude required to complete Gowalla’s exclusive Fun Fest Trip brought to you in conjunction with ACVB, Transmission Entertainment, and yours truly.
Descendents To Play Fun Fun Fun Fest
After offering you this teaser earlier today, we can now officially announce that the legendary Descendents have been added to the Fun Fest bill.
Fun Fest Alert: Kick-off and After Parties Announced
Austin music fans may well get accustomed to an early Christmas each year now that Fun Fun Fun Fest has established itself as a veritable source of goodies come November. The latest set of presents arrived today in the form of assorted additions to the lineup and the announcement of a whole slew of mouth-watering kick-off and after parties.
Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Profile: The Casualties
It’s refreshing and a bit of a comfort when you discover that one of the bands whose music helped drive you in those early, formative, and somewhat rowdy years - a band that you’ve all but forgotten about - is still touring, still recording and still living the life you abandoned for that nine-to-fiver. The Casualties sport dyed Mohawks and play the same street punk they did in the early '90s, when they registered on the radar of every passionate and disaffected youngster with an Exploited t-shirt and a head full of defiant ideas.
Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Profile: Dirty Projectors
Deliberately complex arrangements? Off-kilter time signatures? Afro-pop and jazz inspired guitar playing? Dirty Projectors' music takes just about every musical motif that one would associate with the term “pretentious” and combines them to form their dense, challenging albums. One of their music's side effects is that it turns even the harshest critics into gleeful schoolgirls who seemingly shriek at the mere mention of their name. While it would be easy for one to write them off as a critic's band, their ability to weave actual pop songs out of their hodgepodge of an approach is something that sets Dirty Projectors apart from many of their art rock contemporaries.
Fun Fest Alert: Yellow Stage Details Announced
Although the biggest names at Fun Fun Fun Fest normally ply their trade at the Black, Blue and Orange stages, the fourth Yellow stage promises to hold its own come the first weekend of November this year. Today, the Transmission Entertainment brain-trust unveiled the schedule for this “circus” stage -- check out the comprehensive list of events below.
Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Profile: Devin the Dude
Devin Copeland - more commonly known as Devin the Dude - is a suave hip-hop artist from Houston. Anyone with “dude” in their stage name must be a pretty cool dude in our book (shout out to The Dude Himself a.k.a. His Dudeness, Duder or El Duderino if you're not into that whole brevity thing). On occasion, living in Austin means we forget there are other cities in Texas - let alone other cities that have a decent music scene. The truth is, Houston ain’t all that bad, and we should take some time to notice artists coming out of the HTX. Get a head start by checking out Devin the Dude on the Blue Stage at Fun Fun Fun Fest Saturday at 2:55pm. His musical style mixes buttery smooth vocals with bouncy, baller beats and is sure to lend itself to a nice afternoon of beer drinkin’ and music listenin’.
Fun Fest Alert: Scavenger Hunt [October 15th / The Mohawk]
It’s back! After wreaking much havoc last year, Fun Fun Fun Fest’s Scavenger Hunt returns on October 15th to cause certain chaos yet again.
Fun Fun Fun Fest Artist Preview: Bad Religion
When Greg Graffin, Brett “Mr. Brett” Gurewitz and Jay Bentley formed Bad Religion back in 1980, the high school buddies probably never imagined they would still be together and still be punk rock icons 30 years later. But sure enough, the Southern California sextet is to this day one of the most popular and well-respected punk rock crews in America.
2010 Fun Fun Fun Fest Update [November / Waterloo Park]
We’ll admit that we were pretty content with the prospect of catching legends like Bad Religion, DEVO, Slick Rick, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and Suicidal Tendencies all in one weekend during this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest. But we had a feeling that there was more to come. Today, the festival today announced the addition of quite a few new artists to its 2010 lineup. We’re especially excited that influential, innovative pop outfit The Apples in stereo will be a part of the revelry this November. The band was at the forefront of the Elephant 6 collective scene back in the day. Earlier this year, they dropped their seventh record, the unfailingly impressive Travelers in Space and Time. We’re also pleased to see local Queen tribute band Magnifico in the mix. If you haven’t caught this spectacle yet, you’re in for something special. Toddy Barry, Chris Hardwick, Andy Ritchie, Shane Mauss, Terp2it, Moshe Kasher, and Sean Patton round off the updated bill.
Breaking: Fun Fun Fun Fest Lineup Leaks
Suicidal Tendencies' hard hitting aural onslaught was a favorite of metal and punk fans alike back in the day. Now a new generation (and old fans, of course) will get to witness the California band's mayhem live in concert. Lights...Camera...Revolution! from 1990 should be a staple of every heavy music connoisseur's iPod rotation, we reckon. Next up, we're thrilled that oft-controversial rapper Slick Rick (or Richard Walters) will be bringing his novel gift for storytelling and hits like “Treat Her Like A Prostitute” to Waterloo Park. Offering up legendary artists at each edition has truly become a Fun Fest tradition, if not a trademark. Let that take nothing away from the third Fun Fest performer to be revealed today, Best Coast. Although a very new act, it's safe to say that their irresistible melodies could fit in in any generation. The brainchild of Bethany Consentino, Best Coast will surely shed plenty of sunshine at this Fun Fest, regardless of exasperating dust storms or unending downpours. Here's to Fun Fest 2010 -- may it be another unforgettable addition to Austin, Texas' rich chronicles.
Fun Fun Fun Fest Planning Summer Ticket Specials
Though we don't have word on any confirmed acts so far, we imagine we'll get some breadcrumbs soon. Last year at this time, we already knew Jesus Lizard was confirmed to perform. What we do have is some information on how you can get yourself the best price for your ticket available.
Minor Mishap Marching Band Kicks Off Local Music is Sexy 8 [Video]
The delightful band of misfits known as the Minor Mishap Marching Band, who "sound like riding a bicycle and playing a trombone the morning after the Russian circus has blown through town," kicked off our annual Fun Fest pre-party, Local Music is Sexy 8. [apologies for the grainy footage]
