King of the Hill showed its Austin ties on Sunday's recent episode, titled "Lady and Gentrification." Certainly gentrification is not an Austin-centric issue, but it is a current hot topic in our city, and it is hard to watch this episode and not see the parallels to what is happening in East Austin. True, the issue is a bit oversimplified in the 30-minute episode....

Today both the Clinton and Obama campaigns announced upcoming town hall meetings. Obama's will take place tomorrow at the Austin Convention Center, while Hillary's sounds like more of a "virtual" town hall meeting - on TV the Monday before election day....

Guess what! We're pulling out of Iraq today! Not. Kenyan politician, voice for peace is shot to death in his driveway. New York State archivist sells important documents from American history on Ebay. Those archivists - you just can't trust 'em. As if FEMA's reputation could get any worse... FOX News struggles with the plural form of "Kennedy". Is your HD DVD player totally lame now? Tom Brady attended practice yesterday, bootlessly. He's back...possibly.......

ImageAfter Art An art industry boom? Yahoo reports that, despite unrest in the financial markets, the art industry appears to be doing quite well. Experts say the market's robustness is due to "the weak dollar, expanding world wealth and new buyers from countries not previously associated with the art collecting community." /// Jeanne Claire van Ryzin at the Statesman has released her "Best of 2007" for Austin's art scene. Film Fox and iTunes will sign......

Midway through the season, the Longhorns are out of the national......

#7 Texas (3-0) vs. Rice (0-3) Time: 6 pm, Saturday, Sept. 22 Location: Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium TV: Fox Sports Southwest Radio: KVET (98.1 FM, 1300 AM) There have been more than enough distractions to keep Texas coach Mack Brown occupied this week. Word that a sixth Longhorn had been arrested in the past four months set off allegations that the program is out of control. And even though they've won their first three......

Moxie and the Compound wants to wet your fashion whistle with its own Project Runway-inspired competition. Both Marques Harper and Stephen Moser mentioned they're judging the event. But who do you think promoted it better? Remember Factory People, the hip store on South Congress that closed this summer? Of course you do! They're still around, promoting parties and selling their shamelessly cool clothing online. But if you want to see Factory People's latest looks......

Iraq to review all security contractors working within its borders, after Blackwater screwup kills eight over the weekend. What the hey, they're an autonomous government. Right? Clinton to public: Can I have a health-care do-over? Racism ain't dead, for the 897th time. Mayor Wynn doesn't drive a hybrid, but he will, he tells Sprig.com. Senator Craig is getting support from the ACLU, which has got to sting. Everybody's leaving Britney. Why didn't FOX let......

The start of the fall season on network television used to be a bigger deal before cable's summer original fare became so juicy and good. We admit we still get a little excited when we read about original ideas heading our way on the big networks. The crop of new shows starting this fall seems like more of the same (sadly), but there are some that don't follow type and deserve recommendation. Pushing Daisies, ABC,......

Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium TV: Fox Sports Southwest Radio: KVET (98.1 FM, 1300 AM) For the past week, all signs have been pointing to "upset" in this game. Texas looked unsteady at times in its 21-13 win over Arkansas State, while TCU shut out Baylor, 27-0. While the Longhorns' performance in the opener was shaky, at least it was......

After one episode Wednesday night (which we are betting you didn't watch), FOX's Anchorwoman has been cancelled. The pilot opened to terrible ratings; the new show shared the same number of viewers as a rerun of America's Top Model on a lesser network (the CW). Critics hated it and female reporters and media-types were understandably offended by the idea of a show that put a blonde model with no journalistic experience behind the news desk......

And you thought you couldn't look any stupider on a tandem bike? It now costs two cents to make one cent. Does that make sense? A man upset with his property tax hike pays his $12,000 bill in change. Fox News is accused of altering Wikipedia articles. Raising a baby until the age of 17 will cost you $290,000 if you make around $75,000 a year. $198,000 if you make $45,000 a year. A......

Saturday night at Stubb's will likely be awfully warm (the forecast shows around 90 degrees), but it's worth braving the August heat for this strong of a bill. For reasons unknown to us, Rufus Wainwright and Neko Case are both playing at Stubb's, a venue that either performer could likely play on their own. Rufus Wainwright is the moody, theatrical brother in the musical Wainwright clan, which includes father Loudon Wainwright III, sister Martha,......

Whether you like Michael Moore or think he's an anti-American nutjob, the guy's coming out with a new movie. Sicko is a study of America's (failing) health care system. Moore talks to victims (like a man who had to choose which of his two severed fingers to reattach, because he couldn't afford both) and perpetrators (oft-repentant health insurance agents) of the U.S. health care system, then trots (okay, maybe plods) around the globe in search......

[Via Chris Garcia @ Austin360] According to the Hollywood Reporter, a Memphis projectionist named Jesse Morrison was fired after writing a scathing early review of the new Fantastic Four flick for Austin-based Ain't It Cool News. (Because it's apparently some kind of closely guarded trade secret that Silver Surfer is going to blow.) In his capacity as a projectionist for the Malco Theater chain, Morrison was able to sneak a peek at quite a few......

City officials have turned away FOX's crapfest viewer-favorite Cops, which was supposed to start filming here very soon. A couple years ago, Travis County Sheriffs were featured on the ultimate reality show (and plan to be on the show again), but Austin officials aren't allowing APD to get involved with it. While some in the Austin Police Association are disappointed, it may be best that America is spared seeing another half-naked drunk person being......

Seven months after a sold-out Texas debut at the Austin Film Festival, the indie mockumentary Chalk returned to Austin Friday as part of a national platformed release. Shot for a mere $10,000 with the aid of friends and students, the work is a collaboration of Austinite ex-teachers and co-writers Mike Akel (who also directed) and Chris Mass. Chalk uses a faux-documentary style in the same manner as Spinal Tap or The Office, exposing the......

We're OK when television networks choose to curb the amount of gratuitous "adult" content in prime-time programming, but we've always figured that such stuff, within reason, was fair game on cable networks. After all, Comedy Central has a sketch comedy show starring a naked trucker, FX's Nip/Tuck once had one of its stars engaging in gross raunchy sex with a mother-daughter duo, and Fox News regularly gets away with putting Bill O'Reilly on the......

We are totally jealous of Alyson Fox. Alyson owns an adorable house here in Austin with her boyfriend, was recently mentioned in the New York Times as an up-and-coming artist, and is starting her own clothing line. Impressed yet? Well, to boot, Steven Alan – who happens to own one of the biggest showrooms in New York – wants to see the line when it’s done. But this 27 year old artist wasn’t just......

Growing up, Diff'rent Strokes was one of our favorite TV shows. But we called the show "Arnold and Willis", because we only had so much room in our hearts for rich white people, and that was reserved for Ricky Schroder. Arnold and Willis were like our adopted siblings, and we happily, faithfully followed their exploits every single week. Unfortunately, the show's stars hit a rough patch after the series ended. We won't run down the......

Dick Durbin thinks Cheney should seek professional help. Judging from the evidence, Durbin might have a point. Um. Did you know that the US was carrying out airstrikes in Somalia? "Strikes," as in plural? Somebody should have told us. Poor little Fox, feeling cash-strapped, is trying to sleuth out who uploaded eps of "24" and "The Simpsons" to YouTube. 15. Mogwai - Mr. Beast (Matador) As ever, Mogwai manage to blend unadulterated post-rock weight to their shoegazer tendencies with tracks like "Glasgow Mega Snake" and "Folk Death 95," showcasing their ability to create anthems with no words. This is where Mr. Beast really shines, in between blistering chord progressions and gradual swings into corybantic climaxes. In some ways a throwback to earlier (and heavier) Mogwai material, Mr. Beast isn't merely a rock album.......
