While many of you may be feeling an aversion to adult beverages following your SXSW shenanigans, rest assured that by Thursday, you'll be ready to go out again. And what could be better than doing so in style with a wine tasting featuring Rob Mondavi? The Wine and Food Foundation is sponsoring an event this Thursday at The Four Seasons featuring the global wines from Folio, which is a Mondavi-run company featuring over 25 wine labels from California, New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Austria, and Argentina. Over 40 wines will be available to sample at this tasting event.

More Wristbands Available Wednesday: At least a few of the coveted SXSW wristbands will be sold via the conventional route this year. The Austin Chronicle reports that 400+ wristbands priced at $165 will be on sale from 9:30am on Wednesday 3/12 at Waterloo Records. These wristbands do not require an local ID, so out-of-towners can finally get their show at wristbands not obtained through nefarious means. They also report that a second batch may be made available next week, so stay tuned for more information.
The owners of The Broken Spoke on South Lamar have reached an agreement with Ardent Residential (also developing the Four Seasons condos) and Direct Development (also developing the Fifth Street Commons project) to develop a residential/retail project on the lots surrounding The Broken Spoke. The Broken Spoke itself, including the dirt parking lot and oak tree out front, will remain intact. You may remember that Direct Development reached a similar agreement to include the Mean Eyed Cat in Fifth Street Commons.
Image by the "Subway Cyrano," from GothamistNew York City was at its strangest and swellest this week. On Sunday, tens of thousands people ran in the NYC Marathon, including Mrs. Tom Cruise, aka Katie Holmes, who ran it in just under 5 hours, 30 minutes. Gothamist also found out that limes in Corona are sometimes illegal, the weird maple syrup might be back and a famous punk music pioneer-turned-real estate broker was possibly killed by...
As a prelude to CNU XVI, Envision Central Texas and the Congress for the New Urbanism are hosting "From Boom to BEST? The Future of Central Texas", a lunch featuring a discussion by Andrés Duany of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, Hank Dittmar of The Prince Charles Foundation for the Built Environment and our own beloved mayor. Topics include fostering walkable development, transit, sustainability in times of booming growth and the impact of mixed-use development...
Dallas native Ben Kweller is an interesting tangle of contradictions. He's 26, but his first major label album was released a decade ago. Kweller is an indie rock star, but lives in a Brooklyn brownstone with his longtime wife and young son. And his music is accessible and catchy, yet it hasn't quite found the large audience it deserves. Kweller returns to the Austin City Limits Festival for two shows this weekend to bounce...
Drink up! Austinite-by-way-of-Houston Mark Sayre has been named Texas’ Best Sommelier for 2007 by The Wine & Food Foundation of Texas along with The Texas Sommelier Association. A recent hire of the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Sayre received his award last night at the Grand Tasting sponsored by Whole Foods Market at the third annual Texas Sommelier Conference. The winner of the statewide competition (which was limited to 25 candidates) was determined through...
One can certainly gauge the amount of fun happening in Austin by the number of Missed Connections on Craigslist. If the sheer number of posts this past week is any indication then everyone was certainly living it up last week. For us that means more work, for you it means much better reading. We've combed the depths of last week's Missed Connections to find the best just for you... Did anyone see me yesterday?...
Sixty restaurants, thirty wineries, and you. This is perhaps the simplest way to describe the indulgence that is the Stars Across Texas tasting at the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival. A veritable "who's who" of Texas restaurants each prepare small portions of signature dishes for guests to sample, making the most difficult choice simply what to eat before you run out of room. Last year, we had sushi tarts from Roy's, Shiner-braised...
For some of you, SXSW is an obsession. For others...not so much. While we're rather immersed in the whole SXSW experience at Austinist, we know that many of you just want to take in a free or cheap event or two during the festival to experience the thing. No problem. Here's a list of events featuring local merchants, community organizations, and radio stations that will allow you to casually dip a toe in the...
Andy Roddick, the world’s sixth-ranked men’s tennis player and part-time Austin resident, was in town last weekend for his Second Annual Andy Roddick Foundation Charity Gala. Founded in 2001, the Andy Roddick Foundation raises money to benefit organizations that aid in the development of at-risk children and families, including those that have been abused, abandoned and neglected. The Foundation’s goal is to improve the quality of life and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all...
Zagat's 2007 America's Top Restaurants Survey is out and although the setup on this one begs for an immediate rimshot, it's true - we love eating out. In fact, only Houston residents eat out with more frequency *snicker* than Austinites. Hungry Houstonians are eating out an average of 4.2 meals per week while residents of Austin and Dallas/Ft. Worth eat out an average of 4 times per week. Trailing in weekly eating-out outings are...
The New York Times suddenly has a hankering for Texas food. Over the past ten days, three separate articles have praised the virtues of everything from Salt Lick BBQ sauce to Whataburger. You foodies may not consider these items haute cuisine, but it's exotic enough to get attention, we suppose. Other objects of the Times' devotion include Blue Bell Ice Cream and Shiner Bock. We take all of these items for granted, so it's...
It seems everything and everyone is getting their own national month these days. This month alone, Barbecue; Bikes; Eggs; Hamburgers; Physical Fitness & Sports; and Salsa all get their time to shine. Nothing the overrated food item eggs need more than their own damn month, after already single-handedly trying to take down the taco industrial complex. But we digress. As all of these categories own a special place in Austinist's heart, we will be doing...
What would you do if you signed a contract for $50 million? Take off for the Four Seasons Bali never to be seen again? Buy a golf course in Hawaii and work on your game while sipping Mai Tais for the next 25 years? Establish a few non-profits or maybe take a shot at that whole world peace thing? Or would you promote peace on a somewhat smaller scale by throwing a kick-ass party for...
Truecraig had some thoughts on the shot heard round the world in his column. Mr. Hollywood Jason Patric dropped his suit against the ever-aggressive Austin Police Department. Austin ranks as the second-best city outside of Hollywood in which to make a movie. We checked out the Zuraach Collective and took some photos. AM Syndicate, Nina Simone, Talking Heads...take a listen in AV Bits. It was a busy news week in the Kingdom of George....
When we visit foreign ports of call we usually crash wherever we can - friends' couches, friends' floors, friends' kitchen tables, etc. But we have had the good fortune of staying at a Four Seasons or two, and we have always thought that ours here in Austin is, how do we say this nicely, pretty lame, at least by Four Seasons' standards. (Don't hate us because we're pretentious beautiful.) The service is top-notch, the food is great, but the ammenities? Meh.
