Interview: SXSW Artist Angel Deradoorian [Deradoorian, Dirty Projectors]

You may know Angel Deradoorian as one of the multi-instrumentalists and vocalists who performs/records with the seminal weird-pop outfit The Dirty Projectors, but this summer she’s stepping out with her own namesake project, Deradoorian, and an EP entitled Mind Raft out on LovePump United records. Like the music of The Dirty Projectors, Mind Raft skips across genres without remaining tied to one style, and the EP shifts effortlessly from acoustic guitar beauties to electronic workouts. Angel talked with us via email about dropping out of high school, putting the finishing touches on her first solo release, and frito pie. more ›

ACL Fest Artist Interview: Austinist Talks To Midlake

ACL Fest Artist Interview: Austinist Talks To Midlake

In an unusual turn of events, Denton's Midlake were heralded as the next big thing in the UK before anyone had really ever heard of them here in Texas. Signed to The Cocteau Twins' label Bella Union (which is also home to Explosions In The Sky), Midlake toured Europe behind lo-fi debut album Bamnan and Slivercork before returning home to create a defining work. They finally received some domestic notice with the release of... more ›

Music News Notes: Tacks, Voxtrot, Okkervil River & SOUND Team

Tacks, the Boy Disaster's Daytrotter Session features four free songs, one of which is slated to appear on their forthcoming album. "Dying to Know" is one of the band's oldest songs, but one that needed some help before it became clear how to deal with that pesky bridge. Although the charm of the Daytrotter Session songs is their live and impromptu nature (complete with borrowed instruments and auxiliary musicians), we're anxious to hear this... more ›

Austinist Interviews SXSW: The Hot Puppies

Austinist Interviews SXSW: The Hot Puppies

The BBC calls The Hot Puppies a "spiky girl-pop band hiding sharp talons and sardonic wit beneath their cool, Blondie-style new wave exterior." They have also won effusive praise from critics at The Guardian, who want The Hot Puppies to be "the next big thing." After six years together, the band signed to Fierce Panda and released their debut album Under The Crooked Moon in mid-2006. The confident and powerful Radio One Sessions tracks... more ›

Save Us a Place: Lindsey Buckingham Tour Stops in Austin, Tonight!

Save Us a Place: Lindsey Buckingham Tour Stops in Austin, Tonight!

Arguably, he was the most important member of one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Fleetwood Mac. As a solo musician, he has garnered consistent critical acclaim and a dedicated following for a remarkable and deceptively complex catalog. What's more, our civilization owes him a great debt for penning the hit "Holiday Road" for National Lampoon's Vacation at a time when our nation desperately needed audio respite from the mainstream pabulum of... more ›

Austinist's Top 15 Albums Of 2006

Austinist's Top 15 Albums Of 2006

15. Mogwai - Mr. Beast (Matador) As ever, Mogwai manage to blend unadulterated post-rock weight to their shoegazer tendencies with tracks like "Glasgow Mega Snake" and "Folk Death 95," showcasing their ability to create anthems with no words. This is where Mr. Beast really shines, in between blistering chord progressions and gradual swings into corybantic climaxes. In some ways a throwback to earlier (and heavier) Mogwai material, Mr. Beast isn't merely a rock album.... more ›

Austinist Giveaway: Brothers & Sisters at Emo's Tonight

In less than a year, Austin's Brothers and Sisters have established themselves as true thoroughbreds among the new stable of American indie/country bands. Their show tonight at Emo's marks the kick off of a national tour with fellow Texas luminaries Trail Of Dead and post-hardcore champs The Blood Brothers. Described by some as a "soft, warm family quilt," Bros & Sis' music is a patchwork of musical genres spanning the hard, bluesy psych-rock of... more ›
