The fifth annual First Night Austin New Year's Eve party might seem far away, but if you're an artist looking to participate, you should be scheming and planning now. The first informational meeting for the event is being held next Tuesday, April 21st in the City Hall News Conference Room at 6pm. Artists selected to participate in First Night will be paid for their work and all types of creatives are encouraged to apply. The deadline for artists to submit proposals for the event is May 15th. For more information on the event or the call to artists, visit the First Night website.

Just because I can’t stand Christmas doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a nice gift. And so I must admit: I am beyond thrilled to announce that I got a big sparkly ring, people! And—keeping it local and all that—this ring was custom made for me, me, me by a local artist. And when I say big, I mean BIG. I can fit my whole body into it. That’s right—I’m talking about a Hoop. We can’t call it a Hula Hoop, since that’s a brand name. And besides, this hoop of mine is bigger, and stronger, and prettier than any store bought Hula Hoop. It’s silver and green and white and I LOVE IT. (And, I confess, I bought it for myself. This is, after all, the best way to insure one gets exactly what one wants in the gift department.)

Yesterday, we totally spaced on getting tickets for the grand opening of the Alamo Ritz. And considering how quickly the last triple-feature at the old theatre sold out, we figured we'd be out of luck come this morning. But much to our surprise, there are (as of this writing) still Triple Feature and Double Feature tickets available over the interweb! The triple feature tickets are $140 and include all three movies, the "Attack of the...
If you aren't going to the launch party tonight, you can watch the first episode of Downtown's third season tomorrow night from the comfort of your own home. For those unfamiliar with the show, KLRU's award-winning series focuses on, well, the downtown area. Topics covered in past seasons have been: Waller Creek, First Night Austin, bicycle messengers, Austin's hip-hop scene, the Austin Farmer's Market, urban density, and more. Each thirty-minute episode is made up of...
HBMG Foundation is still inviting folks to apply for the 2007 ArtSpark Festival, a twelve-week-long creative festival and competition that pits teams of theatre junkies, video game developers, and visual artists against one another to create awesome new works. At orientation, each team is given a "spark," an object which serves as the catalyst and inspiration to jumpstart the team's creative process. If you'd like to apply but can't find a team to join,...
Gallery Lombardi, having bid farewell to its warehouse on West 3rd, will present its inaugural show at the new gallery space on West 7th in a matter of weeks, but in the meantime they're hard at work on a new project with local creative "enablers" from We Manage Stuff. The endeavor is called Mobile Art Place, and it seeks to enhance our city's access to new art (and artforms) by taking them out of...
And we're back!!!! Hope you had a very happy holiday season and a very drunken good New Year's eve, we know that we did. Spec's made it a very happy evening, and we've been recovering ever since. We've barely had any time to for any excitement, but we managed to round up the best of last week's Missed Connections just for you...
You may have seen the storefront on 2nd St. filled with workers in coveralls, their workshop littered with pink paper and bottles. The spartan headquarters of the Pink Love Factory stands in stark contrast to the modern shops that proliferate the shopping district. You have probably wondered what the hell is going on in this place filled with bicycles, jump suits, pink construction paper and smiling artisans. Well, after consuming our weight in gelato from Paciugo after dinner last night, our curiosity finally got the best of us, so we stopped in to see what the story was.

Let's play a word association game. You know how this works. We say apple and you say pie. We say table and you say chair. And so on. We'll start easy. Up. Did you say down? Okay, drag. Did you say worm? How about this one: poet. Did you say invading Austin next week with days and days of action-packed, slammarific insanity? No?? Well where have you been? The National Poetry Slam officially opens Wednesday 8/9 here in our fair city, with pre-events kicking off tomorrow. What started 16 years ago with two slam teams going head to head in San Francisco has grown to 75 teams from all around the nation -- plus Canada and France (France?? okay...) -- participating in a single-elimination style tournament.
If you're like us people we know, you sat glued to your TV last night for the season premiere of Bravo's Project Runway. And while this year's cast can't hold a candle to last year's hotties, you've doubtless already started picking favorites among the Season 3 designers.
Last year, over 100,000 people attended the inaugural First Night Austin, which is a major arts festival to welcome the New Year. This year, First Night Austin 2007 will again take place on December 31, but since it is now the second annual event, we hope that it will be an even bigger party.
Austin is once again celebrating New Year's Eve with First Night, and FNA is accepting artist proposals starting this coming Monday, May 1. They're calling for "emerging and established artists with big ideas for ringing in the New Year" to put their ideas down on paper and get 'em to FNA no later than 5pm, June 12. That may seem like a long time from now, but the proposals can include a heck of...

The following review is from new contributor Jonathon. In modern dance, a "works-in-progress" showing is somewhere between a rough draft and a teaser – it's a sneak preview of work that'll show up later in the year as a longer, more polished product. Danceworks Laboratory, the latest works-in-progress showing from Sharir + Bustamante Danceworks, features the work of José Bustamante and two international choreographers in varying degrees of artistic readiness. Though we tried to go...
