Hot Rods and Kustoms, or The Bad Ass Motor Show

Hot Rods and Kustoms, or The Bad Ass Motor Show

If you’ve never been to a car show, this is your chance. But this is no ordinary car show –- it’s a hot rod show. We’re talking giant engines, men with tattoos, flame-accented clothing, beer, and, of course, country rock music. Dismayed by the daunting clouds, the show has moved from its original location at Festival Beach to the Travis County Expo Center. Hosted by South Austin's own hot rub club, The Kontinentals, this show... more ›

Town Lake Trail Gap May Finally Be Closed

Town Lake Trail Gap May Finally Be Closed

The nasty gap in the Town Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail on either side of I-35 on the south side of the lake may finally be closed. The circle squared. The Odyssey completed. Just like we wanted! The Parks and Recreation Department and the Town Lake Trail Foundation have obtained a $250,000 pledge from Constellation Property Group, which is building the "Star Riverside" condos nearby. A suggestion: hit up Cypress Real Estate Advisors for another big... more ›

BYO Aloe

While, for some, the Texas heat of these coming months provides the ideal excuse to stay indoors or plant oneself next to the nearest swimming pool, for other, more masochistic (and fitter, we suppose) types, it's as good of a reason as any to get out and run. Which is why an organized weekly race like the Sunstroke Summer Stampede exists. Now entering its third year, the chip-timed 5k series takes place at 7pm,... more ›

Battle Of The Saturday Festivals: Spamarama v. Lone Star Round Up

Battle Of The Saturday Festivals: Spamarama v. Lone Star Round Up

Austinist was eager to get outside yesterday and take in an outdoor festival. We consulted the IST-list and found ourselves spoiled for choice: The Austin Fine Arts Festival, Spamarama, and the Lone Star Hot Rod Round Up were all happening downtown yesterday! We chose to hit both Spamarama and the Hot Rod show (which we'll refer to as HRRU for brevity), and found them to be about as different as one could imagine. Here's how it went down: more ›

Gentlemen, Start Your Engines. Or Don't and Just Lean Against the Hood Looking Cool.

Gentlemen, Start Your Engines. Or Don't and Just Lean Against the Hood Looking Cool.

If you live near downtown, you may have heard the low grumbling that permeated the air late last night. No, it was not a super-isolated thunder storm. The sound you heard was that of the hundreds of Hot Rods and Kustoms (that's pre-1963, thank you) that are descending on the capital for the Lone Star Rod & Kustom Round-Up. Festival organizers hit their limit of 500 cars, so Festival Beach is guaranteed to be... more ›

Rounding Up The Round Up

This past Saturday, Austinist loaded our coifs up with Brill and headed to the third annual Lone Star Rod and Kustom Round Up to peep us some pearlescent flecked paint, gleaming chrome and decades old exhaust. The magnificent sight of hundreds of classic cars and trucks, choppers and buggies stretched along the half mile peninsula at Festival Beach, gleefully transforming the grassiest of knolls into a parking lot fit for a Russ Meyer Film... more ›

These Ain't Yer Pappy's Oldsmobiles...

Right this very moment South Congress is playing host to a whole helluva lot of hot rods, roadsters and early model chopped up customized vehicular traffic. It's a beaut-i-mous sight and it's all because of Austin's one and only Lone Star Rod & Kustom ROUND UP -- a weekend chock fulla noisy custom-builts billowing exhaust and sporting world-beating paint jobs, while slinky dames drape themselves on hoods and hunky greased up mechanized Men of the... more ›
