JD Souther was raised in Amarillo, and grew up to be a multi-instrumentalist, rock and country singer, and songwriter for such luminaries as Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. As a young guitarist, he was influenced greatly by Roy Orbison, and spent much of his early career emulating him. He eventually moved out to L.A. to seek his musical fortune, and luck hit right away: he met a young guitarist from Detroit who also loved R&B and old country music, and they immediately bonded and began working together. That guy's name was Glen Frey, and after months of working together on songs, they became roommates, renting a flat one floor above Jackson Browne's, who would later become a friend and collaborator.

New Release Tuesday: 1990s, Bat for Lashes & Department of Eagles
1990s Cookies (Rough Trade/World's Fair) The 1990s "play music like a blond gets out of a car." This, we assume based on listening, means something like, "Our sound is snotty, a little fucked up on we-don't-remember-what, and always f-u-n." While John McKeown (Yummy Fur) won't make any news showing his knickers to paparazzi during a limo exit, he will succeed in promoting the display of everyone else's underthings on the dance floor, as Cookies...
New Release Tuesday: Blitzen Trapper & Queens of the Stone Age
Blitzen Trapper Wild Mountain Nation (Lidkercow Ltd.) Folksy but freakish Portlanders Blitzen Trapper have yet to be scooped up by Zach Braff, but that's probably only because they're still on the fringes of too weird. Yet, between soothing and familiar odes to old Grateful Dead tunes and powerful plays towards anti-genre adorableness, the odd sextet manage to capture the listener's attention while totally defying their own. Eccentric, playful and genuine songs fuse 70's goofball...
Austinist Salutes Guitar Heroes, Lions
The Lions have a pretty exciting summer lined up: they've been busy in the studio working on their full-length (and possible major label debut) and celebrating "Metal Heavy Lady" being picked up by Austinist's favorite pastime, . Tonight at Emo's, they are playing what will no doubt be a raucous, sweat-stained show with Red Fang, and request your presence.

Austinist Preview & Giveaway: The Ponys at Emo's
We love animals. In fact, we're secretly training to be EAMTs (Emergency Animal Medical Technicians) so that we can save kittens and turtles and gerbils. We aren't alone in this love, however, as is evident by the longstanding trend of animal-centric band names: The Eagles, The Unicorns, Tortoise, Grizzly Bear, The Animals, Super Furry Animals, Band of Horses, Cat Power, Le Tigre, Modest Mouse, Gorillaz, Doves, Eels, Sparklehorse, and now -- The Ponys. Ok,...
Austinist Interviews SXSW: Albert Hammond, Jr.
After a six-month wait since the UK release, Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr.'s solo debut Yours To Keep finally arrived in US record stores this week. We reviewed the disc back in October, saying: "On his quick, punchy solo disc, Hammond does a slightly poppy variation on The Strokes' first album. This is meant as a compliment, because while most side projects are self-indulgent and weird, this one is concise, fun, and really catchy."...
Austinist Interviews SXSW: Lions In The Street
"What the Stones were; what the Dandy Warhols should have been."* Strong words, even in today's desensitized rock-critisphere, but Lions In The Street have already opened for Kings Of Leon, been shopped-and-dropped by major labels, and recorded their debut EP in a dingy basement with an 8-track and broken mics because they could hardly afford beer. What are you gonna tell them, be less rock and roll please? This is the kind of band SXSW exists for. (Said EP, Cat Got Your Tongue, is available as a free download on their website, so you downloaders aren't getting away with anything.) Besides that, it's obvious that frontman Chris Kinnon has plenty of love for the ATX:
Preview and Giveaway: Joan Jett and The Blackhearts @ Stubb's Tuesday
The woman who encouraged us to shove dimes into jukeboxes long after they had switched to quarters, triggering a nationwide coin shortage in the early 80s, is coming to Austin. Joan Jett, the hottest 46 year old since Tina Turner in 1985 (or Madonna in 2004, for that matter), is still lovin' rock and roll, touring like a madwoman and turning her nose up at the prospect of ever investing in a pair of...

Elsewhere in the Ist-averse
Let's look back at a week in which no site in the -ist network adopted anyone from Africa... -Austinist reveled in the dumb antics of some U.T. law students and posted some great audio from former New Orleans natives who've decided to stay in Austin. But the best news for Austinist? They were voted Best Local Entertainment Web Site by the local Austin alt-weekly. Congrats, Austinist. -DCist gloried in being told their musical tastes made...

Weekend Music Selections
Tomorrow night, The Streets take to the stage at La Zona Rosa. Mike Skinner's third album, The Hardest Way to Make An Easy Living, has drawn many favorable reviews ("twice as good as any album about the price of celebrity has a right to be" -- Guardian UK). King Straggler Comes Back to Town!
We interviewed these guys a while back, and now they're back for SXSW: From band member Rodney: We've got a band called King Straggler (www.kingstraggler.com). We like to call what we do; 'Y'allternative'. It's three front-men, all writers, (backed by a smokin rhythm section). Whoever writes the song sings the lead vocal with the other two singing the three part harmonies. So our record, and shows are like a continually morphing collection of individuals...
Austin Icebats to Stay in Austin
At a press conference held today, the Austin Icebats stated that they will be staying in Austin as they continue to look for a more permanent home. As you may recall, the team and the city of Cedar Park had an on-again, off-again relationship for a while. Now, they've apparently reached some form of agreement, and the Ice Bats have temporarily returned home while they look for a bigger place.

Hiking in the Hill Country: Inks Lake
This weekend's sunny respite from last week's uncharacteristically muggy weather offered Austinist another chance to head out to the Hill Country for some Spring trail hiking. This time we headed out to Inks Lake State Park, about an hour and a half's drive northwest near the city of Burnet and Canyon of the Eagles.
