The Unbearables brought their rock-opera concept to Dougherty Arts Center last year in the form of Bitten! A Zombie Rock Odyssey. Although we were unable to catch that spectacle, the assorted jams on the band’s MySpace page have us day-dreaming about the possible storyline. The band brings its catchy pop and witty lyrics to the Mohawk tonight for what promises to be a grand ol’ time. Supporting the bill are local shoe-gazers Ringo Deathstarr and Yellow Fever. The former should appease fans of the Jesus and Mary Chain with their brilliant noise-rock while the latter specializes in simple yet alluring pop. Julian Decided kicks things off at 10 p.m.

Welcome to a deliberately antagonistic This Week in Theatre, inspired by St. Nicholas – Hyde Park Theatre's one-man show about a theatre critic who hangs out with vampires. Not so subtle, and starring HPT’s Artistic Tour de Force, Ken Webster – a man who’s reportedly tumultuous relationship with local critics befits his role in said production. (Not that we’ve ever had any run-ins with Ken. Ever. Not even one time.) We say this to...
We’re not exactly inundated with new shows opening this weekend, but there’s a couple of notable events to keep the proverbial party hoppin’ and your metaphorical booty shakin’. Shakin’ modern dance style, that is. Werd. Big ups to our Austinist Pick of the Week, Calyx Dance Co’s Danscopia. These kids are fresh meat in Austin’s growing modern dance scene, but the initial buzz is good. Our girlfriend caught the second half of the company’s...

Can you sing? Do you like to eat brains? Then Loaded Gun Theory needs you! We don't normally post audition notices, but (a) this show sounds like too damn much fun, and (b) a little birdie told us that LGT ran into a hitch getting their notice into the local press.
In honor of the big bi-lingual show that’s opening in town this week, we thought to ourselves, hey – why not write this post in both English and Spanish? But we don’t speak Spanish, so we used an online translator. El ir al teatro hará que las mujeres tienen sexo con usted. And now, on with our ¡Selección de Austinist de la semana! It’s a very close call between Petra’s Cuento, the aforementioned bi-lingual...
There's some fresh blood in Austin's theatrical waters. Our first instinct was to round them up in our pickup, blindfold them, and spank 'um real hard with cricket bats. But that's been done. Instead, we bring you news of the very first production -- ever -- by The Vestige Group. Fat Pig, a play about a good looking guy who falls for a woman who, according to "society's norms", he shouldn't have been attracted...
Elizabeth Cobbe, our esteemed colleague over at the Austin Chronicle, has put together a great article profiling the top ten up-and-comers in Austin's "rebel" theatre scene. As you may have noticed, Austinist has a weak spot for rebellious types, so we were excited to find the new punks on the block listed in one handy, helpful spot. (And to give full disclosure we were indeed pleased the company co-helmed by Austinist's own Jonathon Morgan...
