Mid-March, or SXSW rather, is a time when Warehouse District bars turn into rock venues and 6th St. meat markets become home to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to see that next big thing at a smallish venue. We’ve never made it to Ninety Proof Lounge but all that might change when Zizek comes to the hotspot that is “upscale without the attitude” on March 13th. Zizek is a regular shindig in Buenos Aires that provides artists an opportunity to display their genius -- reggae, hip-hop, cumbia, folk, dancehall, electro, you name it, they got it. The intent is to provide an Argentine slant on the various genres and showcase the talent that lies within the country. And of course, party hard, dance the night away, and take the show on the road! more ›

The views expressed in this column are the author's, and might not reflect the Ist network as a whole. Enjoy! Rap is, by definition, intensely and inescapably local. Few things are as restorative as the perfectly lazy Sunday brunch — for us, it's the ideal tonic for those especially brutish weekend ragers, which, in this town, happen all too often. Starting this weekend, East Austin's Blue Dahlia Bistro will be serving up its own version of the classic Sunday brunch, with DJs spinning a variety of vintage tunes and cheap mimosas on the menu. The "European-style bistro" takes over the space formerly housing... more ›

Remember back in those halcyon summer days, when kids with spike-swoop haircuts would sulk over to your house on their skateboards, kick-flipping the whole way, bangs covering everyone’s pot-reddened eyes, just to bask in your glory as Thrasher’s newly claimed “heir to the Hosoi throne”? Man, those were the days. The chicks, the sponsorships, the Jimmy Z woody, all the righteous goodness. Remember that? No? Of course not. That's probably because like the rest of... more ›

What a difference a year makes—certainly in the case of this fledgling music festival. Last December's inaugural Fun Fun Fun Fest featured over two dozen bands and DJs, and showcased a good variety of indie rock, punk, and electronic music. This year, they've grown even bigger, better, and bolder: the second annual installment will span two days and has been pushed ahead by a month, to November 3rd and 4th. Staying true to their... more ›
Chances are pretty good that you’ve heard of The MisShapes – New York's party-throwing trio and current It-kids. Last fall, the New York Times wrote about “the phenomenon known as the MisShapes” and their 15 minutes of fame. They've been in countless pop culture magazines, most of which reference the one time that Madonna dropped in on their weekly residency at Don Hill’s in SoHo. They've been on ads for those Eastport backpacks that kids... more ›

Z-Trip is one of the foremost live DJs on the planet at the moment. Many would say he pioneered the art of the mash-up before it got ruined by gimmicks and Girl Talk, his independent debut Uneasy Listening is a classic, and he's a festival-headlining rock star in Europe and Australia. Combining the dark atmospherics of DJ Shadow (a close friend) with party-starting club bangers, his sets are perfectly paced with drama to spare.... more ›
