Vampire Weekend keyboardist/producer Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot singer Wes Miles collaborate on this gorgeous electro-pop album; referencing Tom Tom Club, Postal Service and the Specials. There’s nothing deep here: it’s two white kids working out their R&B and pop aspirations with Auto-Tune, a lot of synths and some simple lyrics about dance floors and girls that drive us insane.

The relevance of a 7" originally pressed in 1987 (two years after the band broke) being reissued now, in 2008, speaks volumes about a band with impact beyond its lifespan, beyond its then-insular and divided scene, and beyond our own expectations. In 1985, the punk scene in D.C. revolved around a sort of Machiavellian machismo which turned many punks into disgruntled outsiders at their own shows. Rites of Spring retaliated (even before Fugazi did), with unapologetically emotional lyrics about friendship, love and (oh my god hardcore scene) personal issues and groundbreaking song structures that took the hardcore scene by storm.

If you were at the past two UT football games, you might remember a couple of commercials that played throughout the game and received a lot of attention from the 80,000+ crowd. Those advertisements were only two out of nine created for The University of Texas last year as part of their latest ad campaign entitled, What Starts Here Changes The World. Legendary journalist and UT alum Walter Cronkite narrates the ads, the brainchild...

Kazillionaire* is psycho-pseudosketch duo Madeline Malka and Jeremy Lamb. In this sketch show, they create the Kazillionaire* world - an Earth-like planet created by Mother Earth (Malka) and Father Time (Lamb) - created as a sort of side project to entertain the deities during their courtship. The history of Kazillionaire* and its other-worldly customs is humorously described by a creative use of video clips (ala Discovery channel), voiceover and Eastern hip hop rituals. Portraying most...
Fortune smiles on Mr. Armstrong, who - after deftly conquering this year's Tour for the seventh consecutive time with the aide of his elite Discovery Channel team, earning the resentful ire of most of Europe, and brushing aside oft-repeated doping allegations, earlier this week proposed to longtime girlfriend Sheryl Crow. Austinist offers our congratulations to the happy couple! We were, however, taken aback by this little teaser attached nonchalantly to the press release - it...
Teachers get extra homework
Last Friday , we told you about the legislative special session regarding school funding. Because they can't seem to reach a decision, not only will Speaker of the House Tom Craddick miss his Alaskan fishing trip, about 1,000 Round Rock high schoolers won't have textbooks. It's estimated that the delay in receiving books could be three weeks to two months, causing teachers to throw together some lesson materials at the last minute. [Statesman]
With all the drama the 2005 Tour de France promises, Lance Armstrong is not disappointing as he returned to the yellow jersey with a stage 4 win. Today's team time trial put Armstrong and other Discovery team riders on top as they posted the fastest average team time in Tour history. Team CSC, Dave Zabriskie's team (the only man ahead of Lance before today), fought hard until the end coming in only 2 seconds behind the Discovery boys.
Growing up, Austinist loved playing with toys. On stormy weekends we'd barricade ourselves in our room and enact gargantuan, epic battles that always ended with cataclysmic destruction. We'd divide our motley collection of action figures, Lego pieces and crazy Japanese metal machinations into Good Guys and Bad Guys: more often than not the former would be championed by the heroic and uber-creatined He-Man; his nemesis was invariably the nefarious Mr. Sinister (with light-up laser eye beams!), or if we were stealthy enough to sneak into our sister's room, the voluptuous younger-sister-of-Barbie, Skipper. What confusing feelings we had about Skipper!
Right now you may be asking yourself what the f*&% a gravitational lens/Einstein's ring is. This is natural, as you may not have taken any of the fine astronomy courses the University of Texas has to offer. Austinist has suffered in your stead. As defined by knowlex.org:
