The DJ dudes at Flying Turns are entering their terrible twos, and they're celebrating with a party at the Beauty Bar. The drinks will be "hosted" by the Turns and Treaty Oak Rum and Waterloo Gin, and the music - if we're judging by this mix they made just for us - will be dancey and feature robot voices, and will have shout-outs to us the entire time.
Joining the crew at this celebration will be Jerome Derradji out of Chicago, who has a solid dance music pedigree. He's on the mix, too. And tonight, get a preview of what these guys can do with their tribute to Detroit at the North Door.
Flying Turns Turns Two on Saturday, Celebrates Detroit Tonight
Austin Film Festival Best Documentary Feature Winner: Grown in Detroit
However hard it was for you to make it to your high school each morning, the teen moms at Catherine Ferguson Academy in Detroit likely have it harder. In Grown in Detroit, the principal says that it takes some girls 2 hours and multiple bus routes to get to school (especially since the auto lobby held back any progress on Detroit's mass transit system). Catherine Ferguson Academy is unique in that it is only one of a few schools in the nation geared exclusively towards pregnant teens/teen moms. Another factor that makes this school unique: they have their own urban, organic farm.

Austinist Show Preview + Album Review: Sixth Street Showdown + The Hands
SXSW Music kicks off on Wednesday the 12th, as always with the Annual Austin Music Awards at Austin Music Hall, but it has become clear over the last few years that the music really starts the night before. Just thinking back to last year, we remember walking up and down Red River, watching bands like Golden Bear, White Denim and Broken Teeth at venues such as Beauty Bar, Emo’s and Red 7, and congratulating ourselves for getting started early.

Music Mondays Presents: James Brown Live 1968
On April 4, 1968, America's greatest civil rights leader was shot dead in Memphis, Tennessee. The following evening, one man bridged the gap between societal injustice and misery, just by being one of the world's most inspiring performer.

From One Longhorn to Another: Shaun Rogers Stiff-Arms Selvin Young
Former Longhorn Shaun Rogers made the NFL highlight reel this week when he intercepted a pass and showed the world what it looks like for a 340-pound man to run 66 yards while being chased by other large humans.
Former Longhorn Roy Williams Is A Cheap Date
Former Longhorn receiver Roy Williams, now with the NFL's Detroit Lions, is pulling down $1.5 million in salary this season, but he talked a Detroit radio station about what a lady might expect on a date: I am cheap, I’m a cheap date. Get you some McDonalds, with some cheese on it and I’m just really cheap, man. I’m very low key, I like to stay home. I like to go bowling on Monday...
50-Year Veteran Moore to Join Astros
The Houston Astros showed their appreciation for Round Rock Express manager Jackie Moore, calling the 50-year veteran up to the major leagues to serve as bench coach for the rest of the 2007 season. The 68-year-old Moore has been in professional baseball for half a century, starting as a catcher and outfielder in the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox organizations. He played one season in the majors, spending the majority of the 1965...

This is the third in our Longhorn player profile series, leading up to the season-opening game on Sept. 1.
News Bits: Rain Dances & Cardboard Dumplings
Lady Bird joins LBJ, but her legacy lives on. Take a lap around Town Lake for her, and be sure to stop and smell the flowers. Pray for rain--in Alabama. Lord knows we've had enough of it here, and we may even get more. While you're at it, pray for grocery stores--Detroit doesn't have any. Maybe Whole Foods could move in if Mackey weren't so busy online. Feeling broke? Head to Japan, where they...
Hots On #5: Ick.
Gangsters retire and move to Miami; rock stars never retire, but some do move to Nashville, have kids, and start making records by the numbers. Who wouldn’t? It’s not like you’d need to impress anybody anymore. Exhibit A: Icky Thump, the 6th LP from the Artists Formerly From Detroit, the White Stripes. Icky Thump follows a similar template as last year’s under-appreciated Get Behind Me Satan—open with an iconoclastic berserker of a single and spend...
Preview: the Willowz, Cartright, Cavedweller, Rossi Mission at Emo's Lounge
We're not sure if the Willowz are mourning or celebrating the death of rock, but we do know, they sound sort of like a souped up revival of the soundtrack to That '70s Show, which is probably for the best, as otherwise, their hairstyles would be gross misrepresentation, and they'd probably be way less fun to listen to. Think of the sound as the less synthetic side of glam rock – more tooled leather...
Music Preview: Son Volt Take Your Troubles Away @ Stubb's
There are times when it is difficult to look at a band without thinking of what might have been, and Son Volt is undoubtedly one of them. When the wildly influential alt.country group Uncle Tupelo disbanded into two camps, Son Volt was one resulting act. The other was Wilco. In 1995, the Jay Farrar-led Son Volt released their debut album Trace, one of the best albums of the 1990's bar none. At the time, it seemed that Farrar had trumped Jeff Tweedy's Wilco, whose debut A.M. is probably the weakest offering in their catalog. In the decade since, Tweedy has proven far more musically adventurous, while Farrar has essentially churned out diluted and inferior versions of the wonderful Trace.

Emo Kids, Scenesters: Get Ready to Loosen Your White Studded Punk Rock Belts
We have one word for the project Chef Brenton Schumacher is about to unveil: finally. In the downtown Red River area – grossly underserved by questionable taco trucks and the like – the winds of change are blowing. Detroit native Schumacher, the innovative former Executive Sous Chef at Central Market, has thrown down the gauntlet with two projects. In its first year, his new catering company, Pink Avocado, has grabbed gigs with the Independent Film...
Music Mondays Presents : James Brown at Boston Garden 1968
As a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. (and now, unfortunately, to James Brown himself), Alamo Music Mondays and KUT 90.5 present James Brown Live at Boston Garden. This legendary performance was taped on April 5th, 1968 - the day after King was assiasinated in Memphis. Boston Mayor Kevin White was set to cancel the performance, fearing an outbreak of violence (and we don't really blame him - Detroit, D.C. and Chicago all saw widespread...

The following is a weekly column by guest contributor Laurie Gallardo. Hear her Friday evenings on KUT 90.5FM -- The Editors Greetings, chilly willies. I will now quote something I heard this morning from the esteemed producer of In Black America on KUT, John L. Hanson, Jr. Mr. Hanson is someone I hold in very high regard. Everyone should. To put it as succinctly as possible, he is a bad ass. This morning in...
