Modern design chairs placed outside furniture store Design Within Reach at 200 W. 2nd Street in downtown Austin.

Austin's latest downtown loft+office+retail haven is the master-planned 2nd Street District, which houses the new city hall site along with several mammoth mixed-use buildings just north of Town Lake. While we're convinced that it's merely the next step in mega-developer AMLI's nefarious plot to enslave our city's simple yuppie folk, we're nevertheless drawn to the district's distinctive architecture, swanky shops, and quasi-art installations. All of which remind us, shockingly, of every other higher-end development sprouting up across the country. (Here's where we'd usually insert some snide comment about how our neighbors covet commoditized luxury goods, but we're too busy trolling the Design Within Reach website.)

As we drove home last night from our rockin' Happy Hour at the Longbranch Inn, we noticed that a new store has (or will shortly) open in the new 2nd Street shopping area -- and it's a cool one: Design Within Reach. DWR is a store that sells designy stuff - modern chairs, plug-and-playable carpet tiles, fancy kitchen bits - for a slightly more reasonable price than you'd be able to find this stuff elsewhere. (Though, slightly more reasonable still frequently tops a grand or two...) The idea is to bring good, modern design people, so that even those who don't subscribe to Wallpaper* can have a living room that looks like it came from the 1950's version of 2160. We like to pop in just to see what's available and what's cool, and sometimes to pick up a really nice spoon or lightbulb.
