This summer, Austin resident Scott Blackwood received the Association of Writers and Writing Programs Award for his forthcoming novel, We Agreed to Meet Just Here. His collection of short stories, In The Shadow of Our House (2002), received great reviews. In The Shadow of Our House interweaves nine tales of Austin — marriages falling apart, youthful anger erupting into inexplicable violence, sudden tragedy testing family bonds, and adulterers caught between incomplete worlds. Blackwood’s keen sense......

Thanks to yesterday's freak thunderstorms and subsequent flooding, Barton Springs Pool is again closed. Barring another Barton Creek flood, the pool should reopen on Thursday, though we wouldn't bet on it: Austin's extended forecast shows scattered thunderstorms for at least 9 out of the next 10 days. In the meantime, Austin Parks and Recreation Department is keeping Deep Eddy Pool open for extended hours, from 6am-9pm daily. Admission is free between 6am-8am. Photo of Barton......

Thanks to all the recent rains, Barton Springs Pool joins the list of area closings. The city closed Barton Springs Pool yesterday due to flooding, with a re-opening date unknown as of yet. Because of the closing, Deep Eddy Pool will be open longer hours, 6am - 9pm. Deep Eddy's admission is free in the early morning hours of 6am to 8am; after that, regular admission ($3 for adults) is charged. Photo of Deep......

For you Dell people that went to work before the sun came up or for you coffee shop crawlers who haven't looked out your tinted window in a while: THE SUN IS OUT! Hurry, catch what rays you can before that old friend comes in from L.A. for the summer with a blistered skin and a light orange hue. All lakes in the tri-county area are still closed. Barton Springs Pool is closed today,......

Unless you frequent the Hike and Bike Trail or attend Austin High School, you may not have noticed the recent construction of a lime green wall and several over-sized pieces of fruit on the southwest corner of Veterans Drive and Lake Austin Boulevard. These new additions to a popular West Austin corner, already host to Magnolia Cafe, Thundercloud Subs and Deep Eddy Cabaret, are attributed to the good people at Daily Juice down on......

Anytime over the next three weeks we invite you to visit the Barton Springs spillway, where, while wading in dog piss and dodging abandoned Lone Star tall-boys, you can join us in chuckling at families sporting towels, ear-to-ear grins and National Championship t-shirts. Watch them walk anxiously over to the gates of Barton Springs pool, only to be greeted by an unwelcoming CLOSED FOR CLEANING notice, stenciled on a tattered wooden sign. City of......

Things at Barton Springs have been a little weird lately. And not just in the old-man-wearing- dental-floss-thong- playing-frisbee-with- his-bare-breasted life-partner sort of way. Lately, we've noticed hazier water, increased green algae floating around, and now you can stand at the north end of the pool, where before you had almost twenty feet of depth. Well, the City of Austin noticed it, too, and as of yesterday, Barton Springs will be closed for three weeks. According......

KXAN informs us that a bat discovered at Deep Eddy Pool last weekend tested positive for rabies: The Austin-Travis County Health and Human Service Department has posted warnings around the pool in Central West Austin. They do not think anyone came into contact with the bat. Health officials say it's not uncommon to find rabid bats in Central Texas during the summer months and warns you should never handle a bat. Those freaking out are......

Because most of our paycheck is earmarked for: rent, food, liquor, Red Vines, shows, various political organizations, women of dubious origins, and blackmail payoffs, we often find it difficult to scrape together enough cash for a movie. Luckily, Austinist reader Kelty G. was generous enough to share with us her extensive list of free (or very cheap!) movies around town, which we're passing onto you: Public Service Announcement FREE (AND CHEAP) MOVIES ARE EVERYWHERE......
