On Halloween night, at the Rhizome Collective, the barrier between our world and the spirit world will evaporate for one unforgettable evening. Why not break some other barriers, while we’re at it? Disko de los Muertos, a rockin’ amalgam of Middle-Eastern disco, techno, and punk, doesn’t stop at an all-night dance and costume party.

Every two years, the Texas Biennial independent art survey has brought an expansive look at contemporary art from around the state to galleries and museums in Austin.
Have there seriously been thirty of these things? You’re goddamned right there have been. From the days of way-back in smaller venues when Mel and his 80s jams held court with smaller, more intimate crowds, where the records made people say “Careless Whisper? Man, that’s my song right there. Totally got that twelve inch back at the crib. Let’s go to Hoek’s for some pizza and fear.” Nowadays the party’s (past dozen or so) all grow’d up and far drunker. Just like us!

A popular dance-workout phenomenon that's been getting asses in shape in New York City and Chicago is now catching on in Austin. It's called the Dance Dance Party Party — think of it as a ladies-only, free-form, DIY Sunday night Rock the Casbah to help you work off that weekend of boozing. In their October/November issue, BUST magazine explains its appeal as bringing back that "giddy, uninhibited spirit of those bygone slumber parties, when you...
*The views expressed in The Laurie Show are those of the author and do not represent Austinist as a whole.* -The Editors Insert dramatic sigh of relief right here, kids. Saturday night the wonderful folks at Mohawk are throwing a Winter Dance Party. Now hold on minute o jaded one, this isn't your wastoid scenester roommate's type of dance party. No DJs in funny hats. No Madonna/Bloc Party mash-ups, no ironic 80s, and probably no bump 'n' grind. This is a 100% pure rock dance party, and you can bet your Beatle boots that you will be moved along with the rest of the crowd. Don't get us wrong, Austinists love us some scened out dance madness, but Jesus, how many times can we be expected to piss our pants when DJ iTunes decides to play Journey? In the spirit of dance diversity, this show is a much-needed change of pace.
