Dana Falconberry at The Parish Saturday

Dana Falconberry at The Parish Saturday

The earthy, breathy voice of Dana Falconberry lingers in the air, mingling with two brilliant harmonic vocalists and the gentle finger-picking of an acoustic guitar. A dented soda pop can often acts as the only percussion accenting the lush sound of these talented voices. more ›

Preview: Dana Falconberry CD Release at The Mohawk [Tonight]

Dana Falconberry celebrates the release of her new album Halletts tonight in the cozy confines of the Mohawk’s inside stage, and it’s appropriate venue for her to unveil the record. From its hand-made packaging (see the “Making of Halletts” video below) to the sparse, acoustic recordings of the songs, it deserves an intimate setting for its debut. Although, fans of Falconberry will definitely recognize the songs she’ll feature on stage tonight: six of Halletts’ eight songs appeared on her 2008 release Oh Skies of Grey. This makes Halletts an interesting entry into Falconberry’s discography—the singer rearranged the songs, removing any extraneous details in the process, so that the record plays almost like a collection of acoustic demos. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Monarchs Album Release at Emo's!

Can't brush off Monarchs as another "pretty-girl-with-achingly-satisfying-vocals-fronting-tight-indie-outfit" no matter how hard you try. Claiming both ATX and Birmingham, AL (BAL?) as their HQs, their self-proclaimed influences run a similarly interesting gamut, including both Jerry Garcia and Amy Winehouse. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Tom Schraeder Performance and EP Release

We often hear about the traveler who visits our city for the immense SXSW festival and then refuses to leave (perhaps you, dear reader, are one), but how often does an extended or permanent visit also become the perfect opportunity to record an EP? Well, maybe the term perfect is a little off. When folk singer Tom Schraeder hit Austin for the festival, he turned it into a six-week recording process for his latest release, the Lying Through Dinner EP, and his visit here ended up consisting of not just nights on couches and floors but even a trip to one of our homeless shelters more ›

A trio of Austin acts will be ruling the proverbial roost at Stubb's tonight. The indoor show will start off with Jude Ross, followed by Leatherbag, and finally Dana Falconberry. The evening promises a solid set for a low low sticker price -- especially for those who have been finding themselves seduced by the backward looking AM gold stylings of other local acts like Brothers and Sisters. more ›

Austinist CD Review: Peter and the Wolf Lightness

Austinist CD Review: Peter and the Wolf Lightness

Peter and the Wolf are a ragtag bunch of troubadours fronted by Austin's (or the World's according to Pitchfork) heralded Red Hunter. We say fronted, but Hunter tends to do most of the writing and picks up musicians as he goes, finding folks in the towns through which he tours. These strikingly hip transients are known for their colorful performances—tours by sailboat, shows in cemeteries—and their dire allegiance to the Angel of Light. The... more ›
