The moors? The drink? Their everlasting proximity to the Irish? Anyhow, Alasdair Roberts has been recording mostly solo acoustic tunes since the mid-'90s, first as Appendix Out and recently under his given name, and it's all first-class mope material--not as poppy as that...

UPDATE: NME is also reporting that Muse will play at Stubb's on Sunday night, we'll have details as they emerge. A lot of this might be old news for ticket holders who have been scurrying around trying to figure out how they're going to be compensated for their White Stripes @ Stubb's tickets, but it's true: Muse's performance has been moved up, and they will now occupy the White Stripes' slot, while the rest...
Formed from the ashes of Split Enz, Crowded House may well have been the best pure pop-rock group of their era. Twenty-two years after their beginnings in Melbourne, Australia, Neil Finn and Nick Seymour have brought back Crowded House's classic songwriting and effortless melodies via a new album and tour. The group disbanded in 1996 and has weathered the shocking suicide of founding member Paul Hester, the disconnect of distance (Finn lives in Auckland,...
Damien Rice will perform tonight at Bass Concert Hall in support of his most recent work, 9, an album wrought with angst, anger and (not surprisingly) sexual frustration. Last year, we reviewed the album and were pleased with Rice for not letting the follow up to a brilliant work (his previous full-length, O) suffer the slump: Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice has carried quite a weight the past four years. Ever since his debut release,...

One of our favorite radio shows around is Morning Becomes Eclectic, the weekday program produced by Santa Monica public radio station KCRW. Affable Englishman Nic Harcourt, host of MBE and music director at KCRW, has helmed the program since 1998, introducing his listeners to some of the best new bands around the world while playing a range of genres that encompasses progressive pop, world beat, indie rock, jazz, African, reggae, classical and more. You...
There are several Welsh acts playing this year's SXSW, but none are newer to Texas than The Gentle Good. Essentially a one-man folk music project, Cardiff's Gareth Bonello has been playing a quietly captivating mix of English, Welsh, and Spanish folk to drunken (his words, not ours) Welsh audiences for several years. Bonello has already released an EP and is currently recording his first full-length album. He recently chatted with us about cowboy boots,...
I'm troubled, I'm dissatisfied. I'm Irish! - Marianne Moore Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice has carried quite a weight the past four years. Ever since his debut release, O, in 2002, critics and fans have wondered how the tortured troubadour would follow up one of the most highly-regarded albums of the past five years. “For me, it was like a challenge to make something that I felt was better than the first record,” Rice recently told...
Here's the skinny on what's new at End of an Ear and Waterloo today: ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead So Divided (Interscope) So Divided might sound divided to your tender and oh-so-spoiled by Austin scene-drenched ears, but the third major-label release from the hometown favorites doesn't appear to be divided enough to disrupt. Epics interspersed with New Pornographers-ish pop treats, multi-influential backdrops and lots and lots of atmosphere make...

They join a parade that also includes Editors, Damien Rice, Alexi Murdoch, Fields, and Goldfrapp. To...
There is much to report this week surrounding the Zilker Park-sized dust oven that is ACL Fest. The big news is that a ridiculous number of 'official' ACL aftershow concerts has been announced. Many of the fest's acts will take over all of our club venues immediately after the big show ends each night. All tickets go onsale tomorrow at 10am, except for Sufjan Stevens, which is already onsale. This means that either (a)...

There's something for everyone this week in the Austinist concert update. Hip-hop and DJ culture from Cut Chemist and Jurassic 5, 80's college rock from The English Beat and The Church, and, well, 90's college rock from Rollins Band and Eels. There's also a healthy dose of sleaze with the Peaches and Eagles of Death Metal Bill, and some classic punk from X. On with the shows: Newly announced: 7/08 Cut Chemist @ Waterloo...
It's only June, but there is already some lineup shuffling happening over at ACL Fest. Let's start with the bad news: Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice has departed from the bill, and no official reason has been given. All is not lost, though: Rice is still playing The Backyard in early July with Fiona Apple and David Garza. In better news, UK Britrockers Muse have joined the lineup, meaning that those who pined for Radiohead...
You can throw a rock this month and hit a good touring show in Austin. After our usual post-SXSW doldrums, everyone seems to be scheduling Austin as an early summer stop. Check out new additions like Pete Yorn, M. Ward, Reverend Horton Heat, and indie-blogger favorite Human Television in the listings below: June: 6/02 The Roots + Blackalicious (Stubb’s) 6/03 Film School + Margot & The Nuclear So-And-Sos (Emo’s) 6/07 Arctic Monkeys + We...
We just read a leaked report of the ACL Fest Lineup, to be officially announced on Thursday. The report comes from Dallas Observer entertainment guru Robert Wilonsky. As we said, this is just a leaked report and therefore considered a rumor, but this source is about as good as they get. Of course, we hope there are a few more of our favorites coming but won't hold our breath. Have a look for yourself...
With new shows on sale from Sonic Youth, INXS, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Rancid, it seems to be college radio nostalgia week for the concert update. There are also a nice batch of new indie shows, including Tapes 'n' Tapes for Pitchfork fans, Dios Malos for the mellow types, The Futureheads for the edgy punky stuff, and even Tilly and the Wall for you tap dancers. On with the shows: May: 5/10 -...
Last week, we posted a major concert update for May and June. If you missed it, just click the Expand-O-Tron for the recap. You're welcome. This week has already brought a flurry of updates including two new shows at The Backyard. Here they are (Austinist looks out): 5/28 - Eagles Of Death Metal @ The Parish Room 6/03 - Film School + Margot & The Nuclear So-And-Sos @ Emo's 6/10 - Radio 4 +...
Jeff Buckley didn't seem to be of this world. And just as soon as he came to be appreciated by it, he was gone. Buckley composed and played some of the most gut-wrenchingly beautiful songs of the past 25 years. He was a raging poet who sang of the beauty and ache of the world with such passion that it is often-times hard to listen to any one of his songs without having every hair on your body stand at attention. He is one of those artists whom, when you first discover him, you don't quite feel comfortable listening to with others -the connection is raw and personal in a way that makes you feel as if the experience of appreciating him should only be done in private. The one opportunity we got to see Buckley in 1994 will forever be emblazoned on our minds. His four-octave range takes his songs from the depth of sorrow to the height of tortured romantic rage. He was simply sublime.
The annual Shortlist Music Prize was envisioned by creators Greg Spotts and Tom Sarig to "create opportunities for left-of-center culture to cross over to the mainstream." And to accomplish this, they enlisted a slew of "respected members of the creative community" to serve as arbiters of indie taste. Pitchfork announced today that this year's Shortlist awards have been cancelled, owing to infighting between Spotts and Sarig: Speaking about the duo's rift to AP, Spotts...
Renee, honey, sit down. No, sit down, we want to talk to you. Woman to woman - uh, us. Yes, yes, we heard the news. Now, we understand that sometimes love is blind. Very, very blind. So blind that it causes us to marry no-talent ass clowns who breathe, eat, and sleep mediocrity, who work in a genre of music that has strayed so far from its roots we can hardly discern a shred...
You know how you’re always like, “Damn, yo, why I can’t never get tickets to an Austin City Limits taping and stuff? Like, I woulda given my right arm to see Damien Rice in that little bitty studio with the great sound and the Austin skyline in replicate!” Well, here’s your chance to get in on the action. East Texas’ own Miranda Lambert is appearing tonight and performing her original country tunes that have...
It has reportedly been confirmed by Renee Zellweger's publicist that she has married country singer Kenny Chesney at a ceremony in the Virgin Islands Monday. (Even though Austinist recently read about her romance with much cooler singer, Damien Rice.) Zellweger, a UT alum, and former Houstonite has also romanced Jack White and Jim Carrey....
