Cut Copy is an Australian band formed in 2001 as a solo-project by Dan Whitford. Joined by Tim Hoey (guitar), Mitchell Scott (drum), and Ben Browning (bass) in 2003, the group released their third studio album, Zonoscope, earlier this year. It wasn't so long ago that we watched Cut Copy debut tracks from 2008's In Ghost Colours from atop a couch at the Karma Lounge. The assembled crowd didn't know quite what to expect, as the record wasn't out yet, but the teaser single "Lights And Music" wasn't a red herring: the record was chock full of synth-y dance anthems that soundtracked a million parties in the years to come. In the space of a year, the band graduated from the obscure dance bar to Emo's and then to a sold out victory-lap gig at Stubb's, which ranks along with LCD Soundsystem as the happiest audience we've ever seen at that venue. more ›

After causing a modest stir with album Bright Like Neon Love and tour support slots for Daft Punk and Franz Ferdinand, Melbourne's Cut Copy finally hit their stride in 2008. Their latest album In Ghost Colours went to #1 in the group's native Australia and received glowing reviews worldwide. The band's appearance at SXSW 2008 kicked off a feverish year of touring that winds down with one last US run this month. Classic Rock, Classic Country: As per usual, Willie Nelson will play two nights at The Backyard for both locals avoiding SXSW and tourists willing to skip one night of showcases to see Austin's most enduring music legend. Willie's shows are tentatively scheduled for 3/14 and 3/15, and will go on sale sometime in February. In another move designed to access some tourist dollars, Direct Events has announced a relatively intimate show with Van Morrison at the Austin Music Hall on Tuesday, March 11.
