With all the events, after-shows, parties, and spontaneous outdoor dance parties surrounding ACL weekend, you’d be forgiven for overlooking some of the festival’s incredible (official or not) ancillary events. This is not one of those events to overlook. If you only make it to one show outside of the festival this year, Rare Magazine and WOXY, Austin’s newest internet radio station (which is already endearing itself quite nicely to our community), have made a strong case for this being the one to hit. Of course, we’re referring to the rechristening of the decommissioned Seaholm Power Plant as a live music venue, with none other than the ensemble cast of Toronto’s Broken Social Scene shattering the bottle of champagne on the art-deco columns (figuratively for sure, literally, maybe). more ›

This New Year's was tough. Believe it or not, we were still hungover from NYE '07, coasting along in a Tomahawk haze, when-all of a sudden-we arrived at '09. Everything in between was merely expository filler. Suffice it to say, even with that momentous occasion behind us, we're still a bit disoriented, wandering around, nursing micheladas, looking for something to soothe our over-partied nerves. Tonight at Emo's, local indie wunderkinds Corto Maltese will perform alongside Death is not a Joyride, Frank Smith, Southern Drama and Kevin A. from Mothfight for a free show celebrating the launch of Soundcheck Magazine's new Web site. We've long been discussing our excitement for Corto Maltese and their potential here in Austin, and 2008 will finally help us satiate some of our desire: they're in the studio, working on a full-length, and it looks like we'll finally get to hear a larger body of work than the demo. more ›

Two days after SXSW kicks off and our city becomes a living, breathing conglomeration of people from all walks of life, Austinist presents Local Music is Sexy at the PureVolume Ranch. Past Local Music is Sexy events have showcased acts such as The Black Angels, Brothers and Sisters, The Lemurs, The Corto Maltese, Black Before Red, and IV Thieves to name a few. Last year, we remember dancing the night away to Car Stereo (Wars)’ mad mash-ups, drinking free Red Bull (among other things), and having a go at the sweet Wii set up in that little lounge at the location. Look no further than Beerland Saturday night to find some of Austin’s most interesting fledgling indie bands. Headlining is Til We’re Blue Or Destroy, a 9-piece communal rock group utilizing every sound at their disposal.
