Didn't You Hear? There's a New Dallas Cowboys Theme Song [Fun Fest Contest]
Update your iPod so your next Cowboys tailgate party has the appropriate music associated with it. Please be sure your team is fully prepared: no shirt, ponytail and chest pounding. This is the crucial 'Rule of 3's' that can not be avoided.
As a matter of fact, how about this? Do your best version of this new Dallas Cowboys theme song in the style of your favorite Fun Fun Fun Fest band, and if we like your version the best, we'll give you and a friend a three day pass to the festival in November. We'll also share your video here on the site. Just send a YouTube link to paige@austinist.com. Bonus points for covers in the style of Hum, Slayer, Mates of State, Odd Future. Spread the word.
Gorillaz at the Frank Erwin Center [Show Preview and Giveaway]
This month an ape-like entity will be taking over the Frank Erwin Center, and no, we're not talking about Curious George, though we very well could be. Instead, we're talking about the primate-centric hip-hop/rap collective Gorillaz, who will be stopping by in Austin to present their new, interactive, big ol' "Escape to Plastic Beach" tour show.
Food: Vote For Your Favorite Austin Food Trailer
Austin, the bad news is that our city is being publicly shamed. The good news is that you can fix it. The Food Network is tallying votes to determine America's favorite food truck -- the winner will get $10,000 and the chance to appear on the next season of The Great Food Truck Race. As it currently stands, not a single Austin food trailer or truck has made it into the top ten. This is nothing short of shocking considering that food trailers are essential to the personality of Austin's food scene. Do you think Philly would stand for some other city winning the title of "best cheese steak"? No freaking way. Austin should be just as indignant.
Win 'Em Before You Can Buy 'Em: Pixies at Austin Music Hall
As we mentioned last week, the Pixies are coming to Austin September as part of their Doolittle Live tour. Austinist is happy to announce that we're offering our readers a chance to win tickets early.
SXSW-Week Giveaway: Rare Magazine's Music Issue Launch Party
All week long, Austinist is giving away tickets and guestlist spots to some of the hottest private, unofficial parties taking place during the annual SXSW Festival. Contests will be posted throughout the day and run for a few hours apiece, so check back frequently for your best chance to win.
SXSW Film Preview: RSO [Registered Sex Offender]
RSO [Registered Sex Offender], follows the unenviable life of one ex-convict, played by newbie Gabriel McIver, who must reintegrate into a world that has indefinitely deemed him a social leper. He must deal with all of the minutiae that all of these other sad, pitiful, white males that we love to capture on film must deal with, but with the dark cloud of criminal damnation hovering somewhere just above his brow, to humorous effect. We don't know what he did (just yet) but we are guessing that, in his case, the punishment and repulsion may not fit the crime.
Long Story Short: Contest Winner Named Tomorrow
Two months ago, we let you know about the Austin Chronicle's annual Short Story contest, open to aspiring writers from Texas and the world. This Wednesday, the winners will be unveiled at a BookPeople gala, catered by Austin Java.
Austinist Show Preview & Giveaway: Rogue Wave at The Parish
Rogue Wave released their third full-length Asleep At Heaven’s Gate last year, leaving behind the safe haven of Sub Pop to find a new home at Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. The album itself found the band conjuring up a textured mosaic of pop harmonies and poignant lyrics with the aid of sufficient guitars and keys. “Own Your Own Home” and “Like I Needed” were two of our favorite sleeper tracks of the past year, while single “Lake Michigan” was a lush pop hit never to be heard on everyday FM radio. (Watch the video on YouTube.)
