Psychedelic music came of age in Austin in the 60’s thanks in large to The 13th Floor Elevators and the emergence of The Vulcan Gas Company as a community and a venue to support the genre. (Check out this site for a history.) The Vulcan Gas Company (316 Congress Ave.) shut its doors in the 70’s but lately there has been a renewed interest in the era in part due to Scott Conn’s Dirt Road To Psychedelia documentary. The Black Angels must also be blamed thanked for this rejuvenation; the local outfit has paved the way for a new generation of psychedelic acts with their impressive 2006 release, Passover. A full-length follow-up is expected this May.

Even those still rooting for under-underdog Ron Paul have something to look forward to: the ten-term Congressman is coming to UT Austin this Saturday for a massive rally at the Main Mall. "Although he is behind in delegate numbers and poll support, Ron Paul says he intends to continue the race as long as his supporters finance him," wrote Chris Robertson, Event Coordinator for this weekend's event.

Death and the King's Horseman is a complex drama based on a true story. When an African king dies, tribal tradition dictates that his horseman commit suicide in order to guide his leader to heaven. But a British colonial ruler stops the process, causing "disruption of the cosmic order of the universe and thus [putting] the wellbeing and future of the tribe in doubt" (Wikipedia). It's heady stuff, and we have no doubt this production will be thought-provoking and intense.

In keeping with its aim of promoting exceptional artists to the unsuspecting masses, or “starting fires”, SureFire Media + Promotion presents an exciting line-up of local talent this Thursday at Antone’s. SureFire takes on responsibilities such as booking, publicity, and marketing for Austin acts with The Soldier Thread and The Mercers being just two of the bands on its roster. The Antone’s showcases are meant to bring a new set of local bands to the legendary venue -- according to SureFire’s Director of Media Relations, Stephen Tatton, “Antone's is really an Austin landmark, and I think that if we can do something there that helps everyone involved, then we've done our part.”

Tonight’s art party marks the opening of the new exhibit, The Virgin, Saints, and Angels, which is probably not your regular crowd to hang out with on a Friday evening.

Image from Arthouse Stealth Fighter Piñata BashSunday, November 11Arthouse (700 Congress Ave)3pm[info]We thought Houston artist Bill Davenport was joking earlier this fall when he mentioned that his giant B2-bomber-shaped piñata would be bashed at the end of the Arthouse Texas Prize exhibit. But he wasn’t. On Sunday, folks can take a swing at the 24-foot-wide art piece, titled Stealth Fighter Piñata. An organist will also be there to provide some appropriate piñata bashing tunes. Once...

Brunch: the perfect weekend meal. You sleep in, roll out, and eat the best kinds of foods at a different and superior hour than the rest of the week. Anything that involves the illicit acts of consuming loads of carbohydrates and drinking firewater before noon while not at a sporting event has our votes. There are a number of places that one can find such a wondrous meal, ranging from holy-fuck-that's-expensive to the hey-sure-bring-your-dog. We've...

First there was Keep Austin Weird, then Keep Austin Wired, Keep Austin Corporate— and, starting tomorrow, Keep Austin Good. The first annual “Don’t Lose a Good Thing, Keep Austin Good” is sponsored by Los Angeles lifestyle magazine GOOD, and described in a press release as “part party, part information exchange,” bringing the spirit of fun and the commitment to Austin’s quality of life together. Vendors and local businesses will hand out information about community...

According to Bizjournals, Google is expected to close on a lease at the Scarbrough Building on Sixth and Congress Ave. They'll be taking over the entire second floor of the Chicago-style building, which has the distinction of being Austin's first steel and concrete structure (built just shy of a century ago) and, more interestingly, housing the first dry goods store that tacked on price tags to its wares—before that, stores in Austin worked largely on...

The owners of Las Manitas have signed a deal that will allow White Lodging Services Corp., the developers of the Marriott project on Congress Ave, to build over part of the alley running behind the future Marriott site, 211 Congress Ave, where Las Manitas is currently located, and 227 Congress Ave, which the Perez sisters own. Las Manitas will be displaced from its current location, and the Perez sisters' representative declined to comment on...

The Hey Cupcake! trailer that used to call the campus area home is now on South Congress, in the parking lot across from Vespaio. At two bucks apiece, the palm-sized treats are made fresh and delivered to the trailer several times a day. The vanilla and chocolate cupcakes are good, but not transcendent — they're basically what you'd think of when conjuring up a basic sugary cupcake in your mind's eye, replete with day-glo...

Once upon a time, in a gallery just up the road, 14 female artists gathered their works together to be viewed by all in the land. There were paintings, and photographs, moving images and performances. There were Indian princesses, people with bunny rabbit faces, and clowns riding rocket ships. Ok, enough cutesy talk, but you get our drift. Fairytales, myths, legends, and fantasies are celebrated in the new exhibit, Femme Fantastique, at Volitant Gallery. The...

A popular dance-workout phenomenon that's been getting asses in shape in New York City and Chicago is now catching on in Austin. It's called the Dance Dance Party Party — think of it as a ladies-only, free-form, DIY Sunday night Rock the Casbah to help you work off that weekend of boozing. In their October/November issue, BUST magazine explains its appeal as bringing back that "giddy, uninhibited spirit of those bygone slumber parties, when you...

Brillo pads, travel toothbrushes, and stainless steel dog bowls may seem more appropriately placed in your junk drawer than at an art museum. But the beauty of ordinary household items is exactly what's celebrated in the new exhibit, Extra-Ordinary: The Everyday Object in American Art, now on display at the Austin Museum of Modern Art. In addition to the main exhibit, which features Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Can and a giant fabric sculpture of...

Tribeza is co-sponsoring a search for “Texas’ Next Top Designer" with Dallas Fashion Incubator and Stanley Korshak, a large upscale boutique in Dallas. Go here if you are interested in applying for the event. The winner, to be announced in November, will receive a price package worth—*gasp*—$30,000. A public party promoting the competition is today at Estilo (234 W. 2nd St.) and Girl Next Door (250 W. 2nd St.) from 6 p.m. to 8...

Brian McBride began Stars of the Lid here in Austin years ago, but his solo album, When the Detail Lost its Freedom, is one that gestated during a time of terrible strife (divorce, harrowing move to new city) in McBride's life. Recorded almost exclusively on an SR X keyboard sampler, Detail utilizes guitar, piano, vocals, harmonica, trumpet and strings, abandoning keyboards and synthesizers entirely. The result is a lovely, gentle and ultimately emotional album...

City Council will vote Thursday on whether to offer to Las Manitas a "forgivable loan" for up to $750,000 under the new Business Retention and Enhancement Program. Las Manitas will need to put $94,000 towards the building renovation, and continue to operate and make interest payments for five years. At that point, the city would forgive the remainder of the loan. The loan will fund a move down the street to 227 Congress Ave, a...
