This Friday, June 17th from 3-7 pm, Austin Books and Comics will host the 14 Eisner award-winning creator of Fables for comic signing and fan meeting. Fables tells the tale of folklore and fairy tale’s greatest personalities, all driven from their different worlds by a great foe, the Adversary, and living in a suspiciously hard to find block in Manhattan, called Fabletown. The story smartly modernizes these characters by putting them in a context somewhere past the last page of their stories, or the Disney-version of “happily ever after.” For instance, Prince Charming has been divorced by all three of his destined loves, but does manage to charm his way through a campaign and into office (sound familiar?) for a little while, anyhow.

Free Comic Book Day on Siete de Mayo
Saturday marks the 10th anniversary of the comic book holiday and a great excuse to head to one of Austin’s comic spots(and you’ll get a little sun too, waiting in the parking lot). Not only will there be free comics, (Austin Books and Comics is boasting 10 per person!) but signings, food, people sweating in costumes, raffles of some sort, and frankly the most people you’ll see in a comic book store all year.
Interview: Todd Kent [Staple! Independent Media Expo Preview]
Most of us developed an aversion to homework at an early age, avoiding anything that vaguely resembled work, like memorizing formulas or reading 500-page novels. But what if your teachers had assigned you the latest issue of X-Men instead of Jane Eyre? Would reading for fun seem more appealing? Dallas filmmaker Todd Kent wanted to find out, and the result is Comic Book Literacy, a documentary that explores the use of comics in literacy education and promotion.
Interview: Jason Neulander (Staple! Independent Media Expo Preview]
Writer, director and producer Jason Neulander has one of Austin's most impressive resumes; from 1994 to 2008, Neulander was the founder and Artistic Director of Salvage Vanguard Theater, where he directed and produced more than fifty world premiere plays, musicals, and operas - earning him the Austin Chronicle's coveted "Best Theater Director" title not once, but three times (2004, 2005 and 2007). Neulander's work has been staged at national venues including The Playwrights' Center and The Guthrie in Minneapolis and Oregon's Portland Center Stage, but it's his long-running radio play, The Intergalactic Nemesis, which began in 2006, that's been touring to sold-out audiences coast to coast.
Interview: Mack White [Staple! Independent Media Expo Preview]
Graphic novelist and Texas native Mack White is well-known for his signature style that pairs traditional pulp comic sensibilities with subject matter that often draws comparisons to dark masters like Robert Anton Wilson. He began self-publishing comics in the '80s, and has been featured in a wide range of anthologies including Zero Zero, The Bush Junta (which he co-edited with Gary Groth) and the touring art show Comics on the Verge. His forthcoming release, the graphic novel Texas Tales Illustrated, explores unique stories from the Texas Revolution and will be published by Texas Christian University Press this April. When he's not illustrating, White is co-host of the political podcast PsiOp Radio, and is also acting in the locally-produced film Bozoland.
Interview: Chris Nicholas [Staple! Independent Media Expo Preview]
The Staple! Independent Media Expo, an exhibition of creative media, unique comics and self-published literature, is returning March 5-6 to the Marchesa Hall and Theater (formerly the Monarch) for it's seventh year, to demand so popular that the expo is expanding to include a full second day of programming. The brainchild of Chris Nicholas, aka "Uncle Staple," the event boasts a book fair brimming with local talent and a series of panels featuring artists from around the country, all promoting underground media and encouraging direct communication between artists and their audiences.
The Intergalatic Nemesis Hits The Big Screen
The Intergalactic Nemesis was a radio serial from the 1930's that started being recreated live on stage here in Austin back in 1996. Several years ago, Nemesis returned to the radio when recordings of these performances airing on KUT.
The evolution of this project now makes a leap to the big screen with a "live-action graphic novel" from the creative team led by Jason Neulander and Tim Doyle. The story itself plays out on screen in the form of comic book panels, while three actors and a foley artist perform all of the voices and sound effects live.

Comic Genius: Robert Crumb and Art Spiegelman with Françoise Mouly at Bass Concert Hall
Outside of the Archie or superhero world, comic art lurks in some fairly dark places. Three of the most prominent members of the alternative comics movement will be at the Bass Concert Hall on Friday to discuss their art, work, and the culture they've helped to create. Robert Crumb, founder of the underground comix movement, will join Art Spiegelman in a discussion moderated by fellow artist and Spiegelman's wife, Françoise Mouly.
