Although Longhorn football folk hero Major Applewhite interviewed today for a vacant assistant coach position, it will be at least Thursday until any announcement is made.

Better late than never -- here's a video clip of college football's play of the year. Last Saturday, players from San Antonio's Trinity University pitched the ball back and forth 15 times on the final play of the game to score a touchdown and defeat Millsaps College, 28-24. Just as amazing as watching the on-field action, where the play goes on for more than 60 seconds, is listening to the reaction of announcers Jonathan...

#17 Texas (6-2) vs. Nebraska (4-4) Time: 2:30 pm, Saturday, Oct. 27 Location: Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium TV: ABC Radio: KVET (98.1 FM, 1300 AM) The Texas-Nebraska game on Saturday highlights the clash of history and reality. Historically, both are among the premier programs in college football, and the numbers prove it. The schools have combined for more than 1,600 victories, nine national championships, 90 bowl appearances, and five Heisman Trophy winners. But in...

#19 Texas (4-1) vs. #10 Oklahoma (4-1) Time: 2:30 pm, Saturday, Oct. 6 Location: Cotton Bowl, Dallas, Texas TV: KVUE (ABC) Radio: KVET (98.1 FM, 1300 AM) One of the realities of college football is that a single loss, particularly at the wrong time, effectively ends your season. Teams that begin the season with a hope of winning the national championship can see those hopes vanish in the span of four hours on a...

The Midgetmen are at it again in their pursuit of good times, rock 'n’ roll, and beer. The lovable local pop-punk outfit is working on material for a third full-length record. As per bassist Marc Perlman, “The goal is to have something recorded for a late spring 2008 tour.” The band has quite a few new tracks in the works already and their latest show this Saturday at The Mohawk should offer a preview. And...

Mack Brown got a nice belated birthday gift this week as the UT Board of Regents unanimously approved a $200,000 raise for the Texas football coach. Brown, who turned 56 on Monday, had his salary go from $2.6 million to $2.8 million and received a two-year contract extension designed to keep him at Texas until 2016. The new amount includes a special $100,000 that he'll receive on Saturday, when the Longhorns open their season against...

So, maybe you’re kind of a sports fan. Or maybe the word “fanatic” just doesn't quite capture how much you love sports. Maybe you don’t like missing really awesome games that you could be watching instead of, say, cleaning the lint trap in your dryer. But how do you know when you’re missing such a game? You can’t be scanning sports listings all day, scouring the internet for information about your favorite teams or...

We have long been fans of Vince Young. Even when he (allegedly) bombed the Wonderlic Test, we still had confidence that he could succeed at the next level. The guy is one of the greatest leaders and winners in the history of college football. After leading the Tennessee Titans to an amazing comeback win last week, and the franchise's most points in a quarter since 1961, VY is starting to show signs that he will be an unqualified success at the next level. Many predicted he would be good; some predicted he’d be great.

*Update: The Statesman has reported that deputies unnecessarily used tasers on Tarell Brown and Tyrell Gatewood before their arrest Monday morning. Jamie Balagio, attorney for the players, says that a tape of the arrest should be made public.* Update: Starting cornerback Tarell Brown and reserve safety Tyrell Gatewood, arrested for marijuana and gun possession, will not play against Ohio State on Saturday. The AP released its latest college football poll today, and, after a strong...

We'll never smoke look at broccoli the same again- especially if it means that the truck is carrying our next stash. We're getting mixed messages from those astronomers. On Monday, Pluto wasn't a planet, now we have three more to add to our solar system. Tomorrow, the Sun will be cold or something. Apparently water had nothing to do with the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. We don't want to make it a spectacle,...

DCist is screwed in the event of an oil crisis. Not that we're not all screwed in the event of an oil crisis, just D.C. is more screwed. Don't sell your car yet, District resident, a cabbie can kick you to the curb if he doesn't like your address. Not even Metro can save you now.

If you're a UT fan, you probably haven't gotten much done today. For the uninitiated, February 1 marks the first day that college football squads can accept signed letters of commitment from their top recruits. The events of today usually resonate two to three years down the line as the players mature and become starters for their chosen team. So with that said, it looks good so far for the Longhorns. Mack Brown may...

This is the time of year for which number crunchers live. They compare the national champions to previous years' champs. They take a step back. They try and get a sense of historical context for what transpired over the previous five months. Well, the good folks over at College Football News have come out with a ranking of the Greatest College Football Seasons of all time. The formula takes into consideration the following components:...

That is about all we could say by the end of, and pretty much all throughout, last night's game. (We apologize for being delinquent in our wrtie-up, but we are pretty sure the night ended for us sometime around sunrise. With that said, expect this review to be pretty scatter-brained.) Where do we start? How does one man (and we know this was a team effort and will give props later) but, seriously, how...
