Spiderhouse (probably one of Austin's most representative coffee shop-bar-patios) is hosting a full evening of music and fashion this Saturday, dubbed Fashion Freakout.

Snake Eyes Vinyl is not a record store front for a dirty gambling outfit. Snake Eyes, in fact, is just another of those death metal illusions, like Whore of Babylon, Self Induced Pain, or Suicidal Failure. In fact, Snake Eyes Vinyl does specialize in the metal genre, specifically zeroing in on the black metal, death metal, thrash metal, doom, stoner rock, southern rock, crust, grind, power violence, fast core, hardcore, punk, classic punk rock, progressive,...

Floratone Floratone (Blue Note) The band is called Floratone, but given the fact that Bill Frisell is the guitarist, it's sort of impossible to leave that out of the title of this week's NRT. Frisell's history in the guitar world is long and impressive, and this collaboration with drummer Matt Chamberlain (a notable musician in his own right, having performed with everyone from Pearl Jam to Neil Finn) is another beautiful addition to his...

Hailing from Scotland, and pursuing melodious, riff friendly pop-rock, popup is coming to town for our beloved SXSW music festival. Their latest single, “Chinese Burn” has been blazing feverishly on our playlists lately but we would like to stop short in trying to sell them as the next big thing from across the pond, especially since NME (Issue dated 27.1.07) recently stated that Babyshambles would like popup to tour with them. And having Pete...

Lucinda Williams West (Lost Highway) West finds (as is apparent just by a brief scan of the track titles) Williams in a thoughtful and tender place musically, as her private life and its rough patches sort of overwhelm her toe-tappin' hay-covered dance floor capabilities. The death of her mother and the end of a relationship both factor into the context of the album, but that doesn't stop big guitars and generous bass drum from...

Cary Brothers, Rachel Yamagata, Tristan Prettyman, Joshua Radin, Jonah Matranga, Jim Bianco, and Sara Bareilles will grace The Parish's stage on Thursday night as part of the 2006 Hotel Cafe tour, which has blossomed from a rag-tag gang of L.A.-based musicians harmonizing in a Hollywood coffee shop into a tour bus full of artists with credits like appearances on Grammy Award winning soundtracks (Garden State). Throughout the U.S., the tour offers a variation of...

You can blame higher rent, blame Starbucks, or blame the cheapness of college students, but Little City on Guadalupe is serving their last cup of coffee tonight when the shop -- a Drag mainstay for over ten years -- will close its doors for the last time. This west campus sidewalk café is the latest in an already high number of coffee shops that just can’t compete on the Drag anymore. Donna Taylor, owner of...

Besides the 80 degree August weather, you probably noticed something was a little off this Wednesday. More traffic on the roads, fewer sunbathers at Barton Springs? For those of you who forgot and for those of you who just don't care, The University of Texas began its first day of classes today. A couple of weeks ago, we let you know what’s been happening around campus; now we want to let you know what’s...

The year was 1992: America Smelled Like Teen Spirit, although Dr. Dre was sending heavy wafts of the Chronic across the cultural landscape. Jack Nicholson was telling that punk bitch Tom Cruise that he could not handle the truth. Boutros Boutros-Ghali was the U.N. Secretary General and David Letterman could not stop making jokes using the Egyptian's name. The first George Bush was booting all over the Japanese. The FA Premiership was in its inaugural...

Dhaba Joy, the new vegan coffee shop adjoined to the presumably vegan Toy Joy (at the corner of 29th and Guadalupe), soft-opened last week. A piously-decorated interior — read: nuns amok — is a perfect complement to its neighbor, as are the truly odd menu offerings. The coffee-shop staples are all there, of course, but these sisters also make one hot cup of coffee. As in spicy. Their "fire mocha" ain't joking: it'll leave your tongue slightly burning. We can't say we've ever had anything like it. Only a Michelada comes close, but there's a distinct difference between cold and carbonated versus hot and sweet.

Generally speaking, new dance companies in Austin are formed by a few friends with lofty goals and (roughly) $2.68 from their jobs at [granola coffee shop of your choice]. We’re fans of the grass roots, DIY Austin aesthetic, but we sometimes yearn for some highly polished, über-professional fare. American Repertory Ensemble, led by composer Rob Deemer and choreographer David Justin, may be just what we’ve been looking for. With a new vision for collaboration...

If the potential side effects of an antidepressant were homicidal ideation, common sense and human decency might tell you to take it off the market. A man in Rhode Island was well endowed after a jury awarded him $400K for having an erection for 10 years. You'll thank us later. Here is the famous head-butt. Real jugs make you smarter. Babies who receive breast milk will grow up to be smarter than babies who...

We've never been to Hawaii but we like to imagine a coffee shop on the big island is much like Genuine Joe's--laid back, kind of funky, kind of quaint, and featuring daily lattes like Mango Nut.

It's the girl in the cutoffs who works mornings at El Chilito or the long-haired Crown n' Anchor bartender with all the ink. It's the Saturday Hatha instructor at YogaYoga South. Or the red-haired guy who works the counter at the Whole Foods. It's your local secret crush. We kick off our recurring interview series by getting the down-low on the Hideout coffee shop guy. Unfazed by the knowledge that he is the object of...

We have to admit, we were a little skeptical when we first heard about the 2nd Street Shopping District redevelopment a few years ago. It sounded great, but we envisioned another vacuous, conspicuous consumption festival like Dallas' Mockingbird Station which, even with the West Village, light rail, and a preponderance of lofts, still doesn't do much to help make Dallas a real city. Boy, were we wrong!

There's no point in sugar coating this one. The lineup is just too damn good. Austinist has always respected and enjoyed the vinyl work of local designer/turntablist/artist DJ Starsign. But to combine his talents with that of Greg Most from the infamously soulful 45 kings: Waxploitation? And on top of that, Deejay Jennifer (who we are currently unfamiliar with, but wil be soon, we're sure) will also be in attendance? Well, that's just... we...

For those of you who have been on the edge of your seats since last April, unclench: UT and those assholes at the Perry-Castaneda Library have no taste. The Espresso Yourself Contest has been decided and the name of the new coffee shop, which will be somewhere in that big concrete building, will be called Prufrock's.

If there is anything that we like, it is for our loudly shouted opinion about something to be confirmed by other blogs in similarly loud terms. Mystery blogger "theAustiniteLife" blogged today at the official SXSW blog about our favorite coffee shop, Bouldin Creek Coffee, and blew a little smoke up our patoot at the same time. Our Uncle Grover always said, "what's good for the locals is good for the tourons who come in flocks every spring to pillage your village," so we welcome our SXSW friends to the wonders of South Austin.
