Empire! Empire! w/Dowsing, My Iron Lung, and Young//Savage at Club 1808 [Show Preview]
Depending on who you ask, the term "emo" can mean anything from the '90s heyday of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Lifetime to the skinny jeans, guyliner, and commercialization that plagued the genre during the first half of the last decade. Tonight's show at Club 1808, however, should please those who pine for the days when emo conjured up images of emotionally powered rock more so than Hot Topic marketing blitzes.
White Fang At Club 1808 Tonight !!
Basically, if you know any Dictators songs by heart, you need to be at this show.
Bubbleface Breakout at Club 1808 Tonight [Show Preview]
Like Fleetwood Mac? How about My Bloody Valentine? What if you threw the music of each band into a blender and proceeded to cut it in half with a buzz saw? While the blender was still running?
Girlfriends, Cowabunga Babez at Club 1808
Girlfriends are a Boston-based trio doing infectious lo-fi garage rock that fans of Strange Boys and Woven Bones will find appealing. They're in town tonight at Club 1808, supported by a pair of completely underrated opening acts. Girlfriends were voted best garage / psych act in the Boston Phoenix for this year, and when we listen to their music we can see why.
4/20 Fest at Club 1808 Tonight
Sticky, pungent and green - spring and its accompanying weather are here in full force, and today we celebrate that special day wherein it becomes almost non-criminal to celebrate the existence of a plant called marijuana.
Nana Grizol, Geoff Reacher at Club 1808 this Saturday
If your spirits are lagging from uncomfortably sagging temperatures and winter allergies, come warm your soul and dancing feet with the onslaught of sunny sounds from Nana Grizol out of Athens, Georgia.
Ah Holly Fam'ly, Waco Girls, more at Club 1808
They're a Portland eight-piece band (that includes strings), they like getting freaky and folky, and they spell "Family" creatively. You'd be right to make comparisons with the equally sprawling collective Danielson Famile, but Ah Holly Fam'ly explore their own oddity through softer compositions and the occasionally baffling lyric (sample: “We brought these beasts across the seas / While celebrating sex with mermaids / We would marry fish if we could”).
Headdress, Silver Pines, More at Club 1808
Club 1808 is hosting a show this evening featuring local artists and bands from our sound-alike Massachusetts sister city. Boston. That's the city we're talking about.
Silent Land Time Machine Homecoming Show Tonight [Club 1808]
Though the man behind Silent Land Time Machine keeps the project slightly mysterious, the music he produces lands squarely in the familiar. Eerie synths, weeping viola, violin, guitar, accordion, piano (and dozens of other instruments) fit neatly together creating tightly wound but ethereal compositions. &Hop Still earns references to A Silver Mt. Zion and Do Make Say Think -- fairly -- but for us its most reminiscent of Scenic's Aquatica.
Preview: Poppets at Club 1808
The Swedish garage-pop duo Poppets are playing their first American show this evening at Club 1808.
Preview: The Gary, Chake, and Monuments at Club 1808
The mysterious process of selecting a band name can only be the subject of conjecture among non-musicians. Case in point: local trio The Gary. How they came to name themselves after your dad is anyone's guess, but peculiar as it may be, The Gary's chosen handle is not the band's most interesting characteristic. There is, of course, the music to consider, principally that from their debut EP Chub, released earlier this year.
Off the SXSW Beat: Music Pizza Meltdown, RanchO RelaxO, More!
Hey look, here are more free, unofficial showcases comin’ at ya, involving pizza, RanchO RelaxO, and Trailer Space Records, though not necessarily in that order.
