Austinist Interviews Maria Bamford
Maria Bamford, along with Zach Galifianakis, Patton Oswalt, and Brian Posehn, was one of the original Comedians of Comedy. We spoke with Maria recently about her upcoming performance tonight (sold out) and tomorrow night at Cap City Comedy Club.
The Comedians of Comedy premiered at SXSW in 2004, right?
Right.
Were you there for that?
I think I was. Hold on a second. Yes, I was. I was there.
What did you think about SXSW?
It was awesome. You get to watch movies. I like the place where you watch movies and can have a beer and eat something.
The Drafthouse.
Yeah. That was really great. I like that.
Music News & Notes: Weird Weeds, Balmorhea & WMMF
Austin's Balmorhea released River's Arms last week, and kicked off their tour here in town. Austinist Show Giveaway: Rodrigo y Gabriela at La Zona Rosa
Austinist is pleased to bring you the chance to win a pair of tickets to Saturday evening’s sold out Rodrigo y Gabriela show at La Zona Rosa. Astute guitarists both, Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero spent some time plying their trade in a metal band (Tierra Acida) in Mexico before striking the right chords under their current moniker. The duo’s discography consists of Foc (2001), re-Foc (2003), Live: Manchester and Dublin (2004), and 2006’s self-titled effort; their instrumental takes on Metallica’s “Orion” and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” are already semi-cult classics.
Austinist Interviews SXSW: The Lonely H
The Lonely H swept Seattle off her feet in 2004 when they placed second at EMP’s Annual Sound Off! competition as teenagers. The youngsters have since released two full-lengths, combining pop melodies and classic rock riffs while also displaying their maturity via perfectly developed arrangements and the odd poignant ballad. We caught up with the band recently to assess their lives, their inspirations, and fake IDs.
Kyle on Trial for Violations of Fair Housing Act
A lawsuit against the City of Kyle for violation of the federal Fair Housing Act started yesterday. The suit was filed by the national and Austin branches of the NAACP, the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin and the National Association of Home Builders. It alleges that Kyle has increased the cost of local housing by instituting revised zoning ordinances. According to the NAACP, the resulting increase in prices disproportionately affects minorities and the Fair Housing Act prohibits cities from zoning in a way that excludes housing for certain classes of people, even if officials did not intentionally discriminate.
Local Academic Gets Glamour-ized
Then last November, the magazine put together a diverse panel of women to discuss the issues that were raised by the ex-staffer's comment. Local academic Barbara Trepagnier, a professor of sociology at Texas State, was called to be on the panel because of her research on racism. In her book , Barbara argues that because racism is built into our culture, there's no point in talking about whether whites are racist or not racist. Instead, she says that racism should be thought of as being on a continuum with well-meaning whites at one end and people who are intentionally racist at the other. By formulating the issue this way, she thinks that Americans will begin increase their race awareness and it will help to break down racist cultural norms.
News Bits
New study out of NYU "discovers" that blogosphere "chatter" about an album is directly correlated to that album's sales. Yahoo will reject Microsoft's buy-out bid of $44.6 billion, claiming that the figure "massively undervalues" the company. Analysts, on the other hand, believe that Yahoo's acceptance of the buy-out offer is only a matter of time. Today, Austin's City Hall will discuss a recent study showing the economic impact of a proposed medical school for the Austin area.

Sorry, Texas GOP Primary voters planning to vote for Romney! He's dropped out so that his campaign won't help the terrorists win. Or something like that. A lot of Texas GOP voters not happy about having to vote for McCain.

Austinist Show Preview: Super Furry Animals at Emo's
They drink Brains, they support Cardiff City FC, and they don’t give a fuck. Best of all, the Super Furry Animals churn out off-kilter psychedelic pop at a prolific rate. Despite having put out eight stellar full-lengths in fifteen years (a couple of those accompanied by simultaneous DVD releases as well), the act is still somewhat under-appreciated, especially outside their home island. Their talent is boundless, their music all over the place yet melodious, and their shows are often enhanced with video medleys as the backdrop, including the clips of that adorable Golden Retriever that accompany, well, "Golden Retriever."
There is Hope - Infinite Hope. But Not For Us.
Hope in the City, a church in southwest Austin that exists to glorify God by growing devoted followers of Christ in communities that advance His Kingdom in Austin and the nations, is running into trouble with the city. They have been so successful at attracting devoted followers of Christ that there is no longer room in the parking lot. The church would like to build another parking lot in the field between their buildings and Williamson Creek, but city officials denied their request because the church is in the Barton Springs watershed and has used its 15% land cover allowed by the Save Our Springs ordinance. City officials have suggested that church members could take the bus, but that would require a miracle. The church is now suing the city on grounds that their free exercise of religion is being illegally hindered.

Willie's shows are tentatively scheduled for 3/14 and 3/15, and will go on sale sometime in February. In another move designed to access some tourist dollars, Direct Events has announced a relatively intimate show with Van Morrison at the Austin Music Hall on Tuesday, March 11. Van the Man apparently hasn't heard about the looming recession, as tickets are priced from $102 to a whopping $257.
