Chris Rose is better known around town as the prolific and tireless DJ Car Stereo (Wars), spinning hip hop and pop favorites regularly around town for eager audiences. What does someone with their finger on the pulse of our inner dancers listen to when he's alone?
Although the quantity of quality road shows in town does slow down during the holiday season, we are fortunate to reside in a city that constantly craves, and in turn, supplies a generous amount of live music covering all genres to its citizens every weekend. This Saturday, head over to Scoot Inn and enjoy Latin flavored funk courtesy of Brownout! Surely you’d like to congratulate the members of the collective, who also do double duty as Grupo Fantasma, in person at the show. The crew was recently nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album” category for GF’s Sonidos Gold record.
hris Rose, aka Car Stereo (Wars), has kept himself quite busy since releasing his debut full-length The Bandit, a busty, limber little album full of Rose's mash-ups. Between numerous sets at Beauty Bar, Fun Fun Fun Fest last year, and a Mashup of some of ACL 2008's big name artists, he's managed to put together a special treat (with local flair) for Austin City Limits weekend.
Kick off your weekend with an in-store performance at 5 p.m. by Electric Touch at Waterloo Records on Friday. Frank Smith continue as the headliners at Progress Coffee’s Residency series on Friday evening, and if you’re a fan of pure pop melodies, you surely must attend the Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival at The Mohawk on both Friday and Saturday. Emo’s offers up Oh No! Oh My! inside and Toko-Ri Get High at the Lounge. Beerland is stacked with a stellar lineup as well on Friday -- a bill consisting of Dixie Witch, Amplified Heat, and The Golden Boys should make for a fantastic psychedelic rock show.
The Austin City Limits festival will take place September 26-28 this year, and there are 130 bands lined up, with a release of names scheduled for April 15.

On the eve of ACL Fest, we're gonna turn off our laptops, put on our drinking shoes, and head over to the Mohawk, because Austinist is hosting Local Music is Sexy IV. An annual tradition since its inception in 2005 (back when the 'hawk was the Velvet Spade, and folks were still arguing over the smoking ban), Local Music is Sexy showcases a bunch of promising young Austin bands and DJs that we're most excited...
What a difference a year makes—certainly in the case of this fledgling music festival. Last December's inaugural Fun Fun Fun Fest featured over two dozen bands and DJs, and showcased a good variety of indie rock, punk, and electronic music. This year, they've grown even bigger, better, and bolder: the second annual installment will span two days and has been pushed ahead by a month, to November 3rd and 4th. Staying true to their...

If you're not heading over to the Parish tomorrow night after our party at Birds Barbershop, here are two excellent alternatives: The IV Thieves -- that's "4," mind you -- formerly known as Nic Armstrong and the Thieves, returned to Austin a mere week ago after a whirlwind stateside tour supporting The Pretenders. Originally hailing from the tiny village in England of Nottingham, this lovable foursome now (mostly) call Central Texas their home. They'll be...
