Texas has become a sort of home away from home for a coterie of Scandinavian free-jazz musicians. Norwegian contrabassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, who had visited Austin and other parts of the state numerous times with the power trio The Thing (Paal Nilssen-Love, drums; Mats Gustafsson, saxophones), decided to settle here in 2008. More recently, Norwegian tenor saxophonist and composer Gaute Solaas has been making his presence known on the Austin scene following a similar relocation. Though he hasn't moved to the Lone Star State just yet, veteran Norwegian reedman Frode Gjerstad could be next - he's performed with small groups as part of the Epistrophy Arts concert series on several occasions and even brought his massive Circulasione Totale Orchestra to Houston in 2010.

The Gary at Carousel Lounge [Show Preview]
In the music world, the young inherit the Earth. But don’t tell The Gary: the local forty-somethings couldn’t care less about their age, and neither should you, especially when they crank out ramshackle pop-rock that they’ve come to master. You can catch them tonight at the Carousel Lounge with Blue Kabuki and Silver Ships.
Senses Working Overtime: XTC Hoot Night at Carousel Lounge [Show Preview]
As Austin’s Hoot Night train keeps a-rollin’, more and more acts and venues are getting in on the action. Problem is, a good Hoot Night must balance a great subject with the right complement of local bands. Mainstays like Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Pixies, the Flaming Lips, and Wilco have all received the Hoot treatment, so where do we go from here? The Carousel Lounge answers that Saturday night with a left-field pick: the music of British New Wavers XTC.
Shawn David McMillen, Ralph White and more at Carousel Lounge [Show Preview]
Tonight, the Carousel Lounge hosts two legendary Texas misfits, tried and true cartographers of our state's peculiarly alluring brand of psychedelic folk.
Austinist Weekend Music Preview: Built By Snow + more
“Ever wanted to be a space ship pilot in an 8-bit Nintendo game?” With that subject title, the latest press release from local synth-pop outfit Built By Snow grabbed our attention well before we even ventured into deep space. The “rad dudes” rescue a princess in the brilliant video for “Underneath”, the first song on their debut EP Noise, eventually scoring cheeseburgers for their troubles. The video incorporates plenty of eye catching imagery and retro animation and the result is a hilarious conglomeration of pop culture influences.
Headdress & Silver Pines Tomorrow @ Carousel Lounge
The Carousel Lounge is hosting a night of mysterious, dark and definitely dense music tomorrow in the form of a couple of reclusive Texas bands. Headdress (formerly Worship) specialize in predominately instrumental songs thick with echo, space and traditional elements. Fans of Dirty Three will like the band's latest album, Turquoise, a dark, brooding jaunt into a dimly lit motel room on the edge of some southwestern town. Each note and every carefully chosen guitar...

The Statesman Tells You Where You Can Get Your Crunk On
You may have read a little something in the news recently about The University of Texas being the #1 Party School in the country, much to the chagrin of trustees, parents and state officials, and much to the delight of proud 18-22 year olds. In what we can only imagine is a bit of strategic timing on the part of our good friends over at the Austin American-Statesman, today, in their XL pull-out, they have...
