The Zagat Restaurant Survey, bastion of epicurean exorbitance, has finally descended upon Texas. Abnormally long enough so that it won't easily fit into your back pocket, these glossy red books review hundreds of the "best" restaurants in a city, culling the frothiest excerpts from thousands of voluntarily-submitted reviews by gluttonous gourmands in each city. These are then slopped together with a few select conjunctions, and topped off with individual ratings for Food, Decor, and Service, based on a somewhat ill-conceived 30 point scale. Overly self-indulgent though it may seem at times, Zagat (pronounced "Zuh-GAT") served us well back in San Francisco and New York, where each neighborhood alone contained more restaurants than we could ever afford or manage to sample.

We live right off South Congress, so when First Thursday rolls around (especially the December edition), we can't get out of the nabe fast enough, even if there is a good sale at Hill Country Weavers (we have a little bit of a knitting problem, it's true) or a passel of rowdy Swedes spinning DJ sets at Factory People. Now, truth be told, we hadn't been down to 4th Street to dine lately, but...

Restaurant Report
After Saturday night, Mezzaluna will close its doors after 16 years of serving Austinites. The restaurant, which is located in the Warehouse District, hasn't been able to recover from September 11 and the technology bust, owner Reed Clemons said in the Statesman . Capitol Brasserie will replace Mezzaluna, serving French cuisine in November. We'd like ours snail-less, please.
