Food: Hopdoddy Burger Bar Now Open On South Congress

If you're up on your internet memes of the moment, you're probably familiar with the 6-month-old, rot-resistant McDonald's Happy Meal and its predecessor, the 12-year-old bionic burger. All those pictures of gray, shriveled meat pucks are almost enough to make us want to swear off burgers completely. Thankfully, Hopdoddy Burger Bar showed up just in time to restore our faith in America's favorite food. more ›

Austin Bites: Mighty Fine Burgers, Fries, and Shakes (Hmm, Not So Fine Really)

Mighty Fine Burgers have set themselves up a branding punchline. At the risk of being obvious to the point of heavy-handed, we'll say that Mighty Fine Burgers is not so much mighty fine as somewhat passable. more ›

ACL Fest Artist Interview: The Broken West Bring Some SoCal to Austin

ACL Fest Artist Interview: The Broken West Bring Some SoCal to Austin

There's always been something undeniable about a quality West Coast power-pop record. From the mainstream success of Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever to the more obscure gems of The Posies and Jellyfish, the records in this oeuvre feel instantly memorable, lighter than air, and modestly perfect. Such sounds are likely what inspires The Broken West, a Los Angeles-based band that channels these sounds and those of Big Star and early Wilco on their debut... more ›

A/V Geeks Present: Why We're Fat

A/V Geeks Present: Why We're Fat

Austin is heaven for food lovers. With all the great barbecue, burgers and beer, it's no wonder we've gained like fifteen pounds over the course of the last six months. It could also be because we don't exercise, and we eat one of these sandwiches every night, right before going to bed. But then again, who can say for sure in this topsy-turvy world of ours? Anyway, tonight the A/V Geeks will shed some light... more ›

News Bits: Singing in the Rain

30 seconds on American Idol are worth more than you will ever be. (Also, the girl won. Apologies to those who Tivoed the finale to watch later. Actually, we don't apologize -- we recommend getting a life, instead.) Veganism kills (sometimes), so make your own burgers this Memorial Day weekend. We're not sure if anyone would want to eat these creatures from the abyss, but the dumbo octopus is totally the Nabaztag of the... more ›

Crush-Out Austin: Moises Diaz - Urban Roots Gallery Owner

It's the hot Astanga instructor at Yoga Yoga South, or the girl in the cutoffs at El Chilito. It's the smoking UPS guy or your favorite Lone Star Rollergirl. It's your local secret crush. Our column returns with an interview with one of Austin's local gallery owners and artists: E. Moises Diaz of Urban Roots Gallery. We received a request to interview him by a married lady (gasp!) who wrote not just on her behalf,... more ›

LAist's Favorite Quickie Taco on 6th Street - Aurelio's

We realize that you have many options for delicious food here in Austin, and coming from LA home of some great Mexican food we were very happy to run into Aurelio's on 6th Street. They've only been open for a few months (taking over the location from a previous Mexican place that reportedly was ousted due to drug issues, allegedly) but Aurelio's has been one of our regular haunts as we make our way... more ›

Take The Cameron Road Challenge!

Take The Cameron Road Challenge!

Recently, we've become increasingly frustrated with the eating choices in Austin. As chic restaurants rush to accommodate equally chic new residents, it seems like no one's building shitty old, often carpeted, fast-food joints anymore. Our search for an affordable yet filling meal has led us to three neon lights peeking out over a quiet East Austin road. Far from First Thursday or 2nd Street, the new place to park and walk is Cameron Road.... more ›

We have one word for the project Chef Brenton Schumacher is about to unveil: finally. In the downtown Red River area – grossly underserved by questionable taco trucks and the like – the winds of change are blowing. Detroit native Schumacher, the innovative former Executive Sous Chef at Central Market, has thrown down the gauntlet with two projects. In its first year, his new catering company, Pink Avocado, has grabbed gigs with the Independent Film... more ›

Unsubstantiated Rumor Patrol

Unsubstantiated Rumor Patrol

We've been keeping our ear to the street to bring you the following unsubstantiated restaurant closing rumors. Nau's West Campus: Their burgers and chocolate shakes kept us fed in school. Not the best burgers in town, but they'll always have a place on our heart. Rumored Reason for Demise: Condos. Night Hawk Frisco Shop: Another burger that invokes fond memories. Their chili is great added to almost anything on the menu. The last of... more ›

News Bits!

News Bits!

We hardly think Wal-Mart will help revitalize anything. Say goodbye to the little shops in North Austin. Save Terra Toys! Dunkin' Donuts better step on the bandwagon. They're going to lose their biggest market to some greasy burgers. Anticipate headlines that read: Murders, Pedophiles and Stalkers on the Rise in Japan. They're getting MySpace. Soccer moms not the US Military will soon invade Iraq. Its safer than the suburbs. The FCC has decided that... more ›

Wine: Austinist Visits Becker Vineyards

Wine: Austinist Visits Becker Vineyards

On a recent weekend excursion to Fredericksburg's Oktoberfest, we decided to sample the wines of Becker Vineyards. Our expectations of Texas winery visits were low after a fairly disappointing trip to Driftwood Vineyards earlier this year. Thankfully, Becker is crafting a large range of wines that are affordable, food-friendly, and mostly of fairly good quality. Before getting to the wines, it's worth noting that the atmosphere at Becker was very pleasant: there's a beautiful... more ›

Zagat's Says We Like Eating Out. Har Har Har.

Zagat's 2007 America's Top Restaurants Survey is out and although the setup on this one begs for an immediate rimshot, it's true - we love eating out. In fact, only Houston residents eat out with more frequency *snicker* than Austinites. Hungry Houstonians are eating out an average of 4.2 meals per week while residents of Austin and Dallas/Ft. Worth eat out an average of 4 times per week. Trailing in weekly eating-out outings are... more ›

Hyde Park Bar and Grill Crosses River

In a move that should have south Austin gourmands and gluttons shaking their fannies like a yellow lab greeting their owner after a long, lonely day at home, north Austin landmark restaurant Hyde Park Bar and Grill is opening a second location this Sunday. Please, though, don't call them a chain. The people who brought us the best fries in town (with their incredible Hyde Park dipping sauce) is making it possible for all... more ›

Food: Kids Eat Free, Parents Save Some Mad Coin

We all know about the plethora of great happy hour appetizer values in Austin, but another great deal often goes overlooked. If you are one of the many Austinists with children, you can reap the rewards of free kids' dining at many area eateries. Unfortunately, Uchi and Driskill Grill don't seem to be on board, but then again, when are you taking your kids there? more ›

Slowly Back Away From The Yellow Tail: Perfect Summer Chardonnays For Around $10

We sure do love wine. And while it's easy to spend a mint on some obscure bottle of deliciousness, it can be tough to sift through the copious amounts of cheap stuff at the grocery store and find a winner. Austinist knows you like to drink, and we also know you'd like a bargain. We're going to let you in on some perfect choices for a $10 bottle of Chardonnay that will make you... more ›

Happy Hour: New To Austin? Welcome To The Club...

A quick plug for cold beers at shady picnic tables: tomorrow night, the upstart Austin Newbies group (comprised of recent transplants from San Francisco, New York, Boston, and elsewhere) hold their third drinks night of 2006. The unimaginatively (but accurately) titled Austin Newbies aims to introduce new Austinites to each other so that many beers can be had, concerts and Drafthouses can be attended, and Casino El Camino burgers can be consumed by said... more ›
